Har dee har har... Octave key? I thought a flipper or a duck's foot was the official octave key :) (If you don't get it, think about how much pressure it enables you to incorrectly use to play higher notes.) -William In a message dated 12/8/2003 11:40:31 AM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > Just the one hand. When you point the finger at someone you have 4 fingers pointing back at you. ** The semantics of your statement are correct. In my opinion the reality of my statement is also correct. Read on... I completely concur with your four fingers statement as well. Now, I was not intending some great egregious attack on your person or arguments or even doing utter (udder? At no point did anyone ever say to you that you were a loon for liking mechanical linkage. Also, no one is deriding your harmonic series chart either. Research is a wonderful thing and knowing where the harmonics sit in relationship to each other is admirable when it is both intellectual knowledge and practical knowledge. There is sometimes a danger with research however in that we fail to maintain or advance the practical knowledge at the same rate of study. The beauty and simplicity of the math then become their own lure of distraction. Still, I am not attacking either your opinions or your quests for knowledge. A well reasoned opinion is a great thing. Often it is what spurs our research into both the outer and inner perceptions we have of our world. Would you have done all your quantification of theory on valve linkage if, like many of us, the linkage doesn't seem to affect how we play the instrument provided it works as it should and so is merely a preference and not a hindrance? By the way, my main horn has string linkage. After 20 years of orchestral performance I have never had a string break in performance. Does this mean it will never happen? Logically, no it does not. Thank goodness it hasn't happen any of the times I have played Bruckner 4 on 1st. Maintenance of any mechanical device is always a requirement whether strings or miniballs or the bearings (as our recent young poster has now discovered). The above comments not withstanding, I like a lively discussion so keep plugging away there William. It is nice to see the next generation so passionate regarding the horn. The Jack Attack!
