One of my composition students just gave our symphonic band a piece that had
some double low E's for the horns in bass clef. I tried to warn my student;
my less experienced students who have mostly band experience expressed some
anxieties about the low pedals, and admitted they didn't even know those
notes existed.

While I have rarely seen pieces composed /for/ band that call for French 
Horn in bass cleff, my school's Wind Symphony has played tons of 
orchestral arrangements where the fourth, and even third, horns play 
more than half of the time in bass clef. An example of such a piece 
would be Carl Orf's /Carmina Burana/, but as mentioned by another 
reader, such songs are a very ambitions undertaking.
