On p. 239 & 240 of Laila Storch's biography of Marcel Tabuteau, there
is the following letter that he sent to a fourteen year old aspiring
oboist who had written him for career advice:


My dear little girl,

If I were you I would not have any more to do with the oboe than the
pleasure of *listening* to it. I have been playing oboe for 45 years,
and for 44 years my greatest desire has been to give up that very
ungrateful instrument. Stop now while you still love it, and when you
quit, let me know.

BTW, I have found Storch's biography to be very interesting, unlike
most biographies, particularly her letters home recounting her
experiences studying with him.
