How do we know it's a REAL Selman and not a more expensive imitation of a
Selman?  Hmmm???
JEN

P.S.  And does it come with a set of white gloves?  If not, why would I want it?

Greetings -

I have no interest in this other than curiosity.
There is an ad on hornplayer.net:

    Selman  - Full Double - 900 US $
    http://www.hornplayer.net/advert.asp?id=7720

To assuage that curiosity, I looked up "completed
listings" for "selman french horn" on e-Bay.
There were 12 double horns listed.

Two of these double horns had sold, one for
$299.95 USD, and the other for $257.95 USD. The
rest didn't sell. The starting bid for all the
double horns was between $250 and $300.

Strangely enough, the Selman horn on
hornplayer.net is offered for sale by Katie
Selman of Douglas, Georgia, USA, whom I hope
doesn't subscribe to this list.

Regards,

Carlberg

Well. Since I play a (rather old) Conn 8d, I suggested a used Conn 6,
because I know it is a decent horn for a high school student. In
addition, my HS band director has a new Conn 6, and it is a reliable
horn. However, there was an incident with the string on the trigger...
Oh well. I know that Conn is a reliable company. I just wish that they
were buying the horn in person, rather than on ebay.

Re: [Hornlist] Selman Horn

2008-04-30 Thread C . J . L . Wolf
I bought a 'Stagg' B-flat horn to take abroad for several months, when I
didn't want to risk my good horn and wanted to pass the audition for the
university orchestra immediately on my return. It came with white gloves
too, so perhaps it was the same manufacturer.

At first the intonation was terrible, but after a few weeks a single
bobble of expanded polystyrene worked its way out of the far end, and the
intonation magically improved. It was actually quite playable, but it was
tinny and I don't know how long it would have lasted had I kept it. A lot
of it was arguably cosmetic rather than functional. For example, the
fastenings between tubes were made of cut wire rather than mouldings.

A couple of years in the future when the manufacturers learn what they're
doing, these instruments may start to become quite acceptable.

"This is NOT one of those Cheap Imitations of the Selman! " - Thank God for
that. I wonder what a cheap imitation of a Selman looks like? Cardboard
cutout, perhaps? I think I saw one of those hanging up in a shoe store around
Christmas time as a holiday decoration one time...

I was especially impressed by the white gloves they include with every horn. I
guess that is in case you decide you need to commit a crime with the horn, the
CSI's will never be able to prove it was yours due to the lack of fingerprints?

These horns have such a poor reputation, we should probably add NHR to the
subject line from now on...
