[Hornlist] Sleigh ride

2005-12-14 Thread David Jewell
Hi Groups - last night on PBS they aired a documentary all about Leroy
Anderson, and it was very interesting. In light of the recent thread about
"Sleigh Ride" and our non-favorite musics, I thought that you might want to
check your PBS listings and see if it is going to air sometime in your area.

I heard that for the first time last year. A trumpet playing friend of mine
sent it to me and said that this is the reason trumpet players are not
allowed to have "Trumpet Christmas". I laughed until I cried. Thanks for
bringing back a wondeful memory.

[Hornlist] Sleigh Ride, and Wet Lips

2005-12-12 Thread Larry Jellison
Sleigh Ride... did it Sat. and Sun. in Carlsbad.
Audiences like it. Of course, horn parts are
notoriously simplistic, but not a bad orchestration
overall. Our principal hornist, being with this group
for 16 years, also played the wooden "whip" which
takes some skill, as she has to anticipate when to
start the swing of the thing. At the end of the
performance, she got to stand and take a bow, which
she did with full grandeur, tongue-in-cheek, of
course!

Worst horn parts? Definitely many arrangements for
concert band where the horns have no rests and lots of
offbeats-- enough arranger-abuse to cause a horn
player to become slightly anti-social.

Wet lips vs. dry lips? Depends on how much grip you
want to get on the music, and for me, than can change
minutely from day-to-day. Overall, you need enough
wetness to allow dexterity to move between the high
notes and the low notes. Doesn't need to be a
black-and-white decision, but one of shades of gray...
some days are grayer than others.
