David,
You've already gotten some sage advice about your program notes for the
Strauss Andante, but here are a few more details you might include.
The exact date of the piece is unknown, but it was presumably written before
the silver wedding anniversary of Franz Joseph and Josephine (Josepha)
Strauss on August 29, 1888. This would put it just before Don Juan (finished
Sept. 30, 1888) in the Strauss canon. The manuscript (now housed in the
Munich Stadtbibliothek) wasn't published until 1973, the year the work was
given its public premiere in Vienna on May 3 by Bernhard Paul and Renate
Kramer-Preisenhammer. The Andante was dedicated to his "dear, honored father
on the occasion of his silver anniversary."
If you quote the dedication exactly, the audience will pay your performance
the rapt attention it deserves. This is because they will all be wondering:
what present did Strauss give his mother?
