FWIW, I always use a penetrating oil before pulling slides, which is best
done with special slide pulling pliers and other tools designed to not damage the
instrument. Any good penetrating oil is a good idea.

[Hornlist] Stuck slides (Sort of HR)

2004-09-03 Thread Kjellrun Hestekin
Looking for some advice from the astute horn folks (and apologies to
those who will get this on both horn lists)

I am teaching the brass methods class at our fiscally challenged
university this fall. Grad students have been teaching it for the
past few years, and I'm finding many of the instruments have not been
maintained terribly well (at all??)

Many of the instruments have immoveable slides. In an effort to
stretch the budget a bit, I thought I would make an attempt to free
some of them up before resorting to hauling them all in. (Instruments
with valve problems are going straight to the shop!) My questions
are: is it safe to use Liquid Wrench (or is there a better product)?
Is it likely to do any good??

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Spending my weekend in the maintenance room,
Kjellrun
