[Hornlist] giardinelli MP problem
To remove the rim from the MP, try the method I use to remove metal parts that have been put together with a shrink fit or otherwise too tight to loosen normally. Place the stem of the MP in ice water until it will cool no more. Remove, turn the assembly upside down and dip ONLY the rim in very hot water. That procedure will cause the stem to shrink and the rim to expand thus loosening the fit. Now unscrew rim. RE: [Hornlist] Giardinelli MP Problem Solved (fwd)
To remove a stuck rim: 1. Hold the mouthpiece in your left hand, rim up. 2. Using a rawhide mallet, strike a sharp, hard blow directly downward on the face of the rim. 3. Repeat as often as necessary to free the rim. 4. After the rim frees up, put a touch of grease on the threads and work the rim back onto the cup to clean out the threads. Clean up afterwards. Do not heat the mouthpiece, cool the mouthpiece, or apply penetrating oil or WD-40 (useless). Do not use pliers or vise-grips (the premier tool of fine craftsmanship). The use of these tools carries a very high risk of destroying the rim. I have had success using pliers whose jaws are heavily insulated with soft materials like cloth and duct tape to prevent scarring the surfaces of the mp. I used Vise-grips so as to precisely control the pressure. I'm sure that more experienced de-rimmers than I will not recommend that over malletwhacking, so I won't either, but it worked and it didn't hurt anything. A good start as already suggested though, is to get WD40 or other in the crevice, cool the mp, then heat the rim. I wonder if bathing it in an ultra-sonic cleaner might help loosen the parts. { David Goldberg: [EMAIL PROTECTED] } { Math Dept, Washtenaw Community College } { Ann Arbor Michigan } ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/rosmun%40osmun.com ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] Giardinelli MP Problem Solved
Many thanks to Robert Osmun - his advice helped solve the stuck rim on a brand new Giardinelli mouthpiece - I heated the rim of the C-12, then put some penetrating oil in the crack under the rim, whacked it for a while with a wooden mallet (no nicks or scratches on the rim the hammer took a beating though) and viola - the rim reluctantly unscrewed...It appears the maker was careless when silver plating the mouthpiece and a lot of plating got up in the threads - effectively welding the rim to the body. I wonder who made it? Any ways - I recommend the Ebay seller jb promotions and the mouthpieces they have up - provided you are willing to do a little work to get them fully funcitonal Gary in Regina ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
