Hey, that's exactly what the moneychangers in the temple yard thought!

I consider Ewald part of the standard rep. Basically on any church gig I have
ever played the organist supplies the hymns. He hands you 4 part stuff
indicates where he wants the group to play or not play, what he uses as an
intro,
etc. Depending on the church situation and players he might ask for a descant
line or might have one written out (that is almost always a trumpet players
part). The hired group normally plays additional music which in my case has
never been hymns. We work out what type of mood is appropriate to that weeks
liturgy, rejoiceful, reflective, etc., and what length of piece he is looking
for
at what spot in the service, before we show up. Normally we do processional,
recessional and one or 2 things during the service. We always have a few short
fill pieces in case there is a need to wait for something or someone. Although
most church organists I work for are very good improvisers. We also usually
have an extra piece to tag on at the end if people are milling about or if it
is
a large congregation and takes time to get everyone out of the church.
They are hiring you to add to the service play something you sound great on
and that fits the bill in terms of what the organist has in mind for music that
week. Hymns are touching things because they have special meaning for
specific Sundays.

Use your own judgement. For the most part, your typical church
audience appreciates anything you play. If it is appropriate to
you, then it's probably OK.

The group I played in played the 3rd movement of Ewald 1 a while
back! The church loved it and it was much satisfying to play than
the standards.

I can never be sure, of course, but I suspect that sooner or later
everybody who ever blows a spitvalve winds up playing Die
Bankelsangerlieder. And why not? It's a great tune.

Die Bankelsangerlieder is listed as "anonymous" in some catalogs -- but
didn't the musicalologists figure out who the composer is?

2005-05-22 Thread Anna Henry
After our quintet's trombone player scoured the state's libraries, we ended up
with several pieces, few of which we have ever played.

One of our favorite pieces is from the Canadian Brass middle (intermediate)
level quintet book. It is an arrangement of Humperdinck's "Prayer" from Hansel
and Gretel. It's very beautiful.

Robert King arrangements are another standard of ours, and about the only thing
our library has. We play a lot of Mouret "Rondeau" and "Sonata from Die
Bankelsangerlieder."

Things that we play in church are not necessarily religious pieces. Since
there is no sung text, as long as the group means it for a setting like that,
anything is fine. Depending on the church, you could even play the Canadian
Brass "Amazing Grace." Use your own judgement. For the most part, your
typical church audience appreciates anything you play. If it is appropriate to
you, then it's probably OK.

[Hornlist] quintets for church (also trios, solos)

I coach a fledgling college brass quintet. We are looking for a couple
of collections of stuff appropriate for church. What publications
have most appealed to you folks?

I have composed some quintets, based on hymn tunes, that are
appropriate for church (or recital) as well as some trios and horn
solos for church use as well. There is even one for SATB choir and
solo horn. These works are mostly theme-and-variation or partita with
interesting things for all the players to do. Mostly intermediate
difficulty. Prelude on "A Mighty Fortress" for quintet is a novel
approach to the familiar tune and gets very favorable comments.

My music is available from various publishers. See my web page:

2005-05-22 Thread BVD Press

Dear Tom,

Pardon the advertisement, but you will find almost 3500 Brass
Quintets on my site:

http://www.bvdpress.com/

2 sets of Quintets that I put into publications last year might be of interest:
results found in category Brass Quintet
BVD129 2 Hymns - various/Christofferson $15.00
1. I Need Thee Every Hour - Lowery
2. Rejoice, The Lord is King - Parker

BVD130 2 More Hymns - various/Christofferson $15.00
1. Blest Be The Tie That Binds - Nageli
2. Rock of Ages - Hastings

Available through my site or theirs, music from Anderkamp Music might
be of interest as well. Many hymns that are a bit more upbeat and
interesting than the standard straight ahead hymns! There are .pdf
and .mp3 samples on both sites.

Jack Gale book: Debbie mentioned this book in another email. It
includes a bunch of charts, but it is currently be reprinted and
unavailable until June. I do not have any copies left and a few
other dealers have mentioned to me they are out as well.

Please feel free to ask any questions!

Tom, Jack Gale has put some of his arrangements in book format so you get 10
standards (Pachabel Kanon, Trumpet Tune, etc.) I don't have my quintet book
in front of me to give you a publisher but they are readily available. If you
have trouble finding them, send me an e-mail and I'll dig it out.

Church music is quite well represented among the .pdf scores and parts,
which I offer for free. My largest project is about presenting Danish hymns,
but you also will find Russian liturgical music by Tchaikovsky as well as
music from a number of European countries.

Some are a bit surprised by my modular approach to arranging, but there are
thorough how-to texts especially for my Danish hymn project.

My download homepage has a link for the index of all my uploaded music
files. You can download them for free, when I have received your reply to my
"Welcome"-mail. Players already approved for the group in question of course
have direct access.
