I think where the valve timing marks line up is determined by the RPM your
running at. You want a 5 degree advance at higher rpms to avoid valve
float. Wes, is that correct?

IIRC too much advance at low RPM will cause a backfire. This is
annoying to your section-mates.

6 degrees at top dead center, unless you are running a small block Chevy and
you want to run 12 degrees.

They probably didn't clean all the Brasso out of the casing, and the
chewing gum hardened and fell off the bumper.

If you've been following the latest repair thread, you will have
concluded, correctly, that this list is populated by many of the best
technicians in the world. You don't need a top technician to properly
clean and set up a horn, as long as he is setting the shop standards
and betting his reputation on the results.

I do most of my own repair work since I collect and restore old
instruments. The first thing my teacher from the BSO taught me was how
to disassemble rotors and clean my horn. It's easy and fun and very
satisfying to know the inside of your instrument so intimately that you
are aware of the changes going on over the years. If you know your own
instrument like this, you'll find it much more pleasurable for both you
and a competent technician to plan and schedule repairs that become
necessary.

I've never gone into professional repair because I'm too uncomfortable
dealing with people who are completely ignorant of the process. If I
quote the minimum possible, which is what they want to hear, there is
an almost certainty that the instrument will only stay functional for a
short period. Covering all the possibilities, they may as well replace
the instrument. Instead, I work as a consultant. There are those who
see no difference between a consultant and a hooker, except the
customer always gets what he pays for from the consultant..

Subject: [Hornlist] repair technitians

Does anyone have a repair technician they trust in the
Los Angeles, Orange County area. At this point I'm
even willing to travel to San Diego for a good valve
person.

I sent my spare horn in for a cleaning and when I went
to pick it up one valve was way off from the timing
marks and another valve was sluggish. I told them to
try again with the valve timing and seating.

Am I making too big an issue over valve timing or
should the timing marks from the bearing to the cap
line up exactly?

Kathy

Hi Kathy,
I believe that the timing marks should match up exactly- unless there is a
problem with them being incorrectly marked by the maker-which rarely happens.
In the unlikely case that they are mismarked however, this should be
explained to you how they are off and why the tech lined them up that way they
did- by the tech when you pick up the instrument.
