Yes, unusual, but the text (ductus of melody & technique required) is
just common stuff.

Hi Hans,

I got a hold of a PDF of the score, and maybe in your universe it's
not unusual, but anything with that many high Ds in it is unusual for
me! Very few orchestral or opera pieces go that high for that long.

Sorry I got the number wrong before, I think the other one I played
was 89, not 87.

Just 74 measures without any rest, 28 written high c3 (played high d3),
but 16 of the mare tied together in pairs, 30 high b-nat (played c3#),
just 6 tied pairs, one high bb2 (played c3). Be careful with your
embouchure, use the descant, please.

Hi Hans,

Thanks so much for your offer. I'm playing the cantata at Stanford
University at the end of the month, so they should send the parts to
me soon. I just wanted to know in advance how high it was.

I guess it's time to get the high chops back in shape...

If you see the part the first time at the just one (perhaps) rehearsal,
you can make it, if your embouchure is right & if you bring a descant
horn. There are only one flat & one courtesy natural each plus two
sharps. The text is mainly of (more or less) scales written as C-major
scales for horn in G, sometimes the scales in form of steps, nothing to
be practised. But you need endurance, nothing strange to you in your
freelancing life.

Hi again,

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear. If they don't get the part to me by
the end of the week, I may ask for a copy from you, but for now I am
OK.

By the way, I didn't want to mail to the whole list but I also played
in a beautiful place recently. I played in a wedding at Pebble Beach
golf course, right off the 17th fairway. The room the wedding was in
was glass on three sides, and the view was of the Pacific near Carmel
(only a few feet from the building) and the beautiful fairway.

RE: [Hornlist] Bach 112

2004-07-12 Thread hans
Scott, BWV 112 has 74 measures continuous playing in the upper & high
range without a single rest incl. 14-times reaching written high d3 (you
are right, horns are in G) but the 2nd horn has 18 written a2 (b-nat.2
on the F-Horn).

So one has to be careful with the embouchure. The text is not
complicated, so one has not to practice much this kind of music .
Anyway, playing Bach cantatas is not a task for inexperienced. You as
experienced horn player will not find other difficulties than with the
endurance. For sound reasons, it is wise to use high F-descant horns or
if you get one of these Bb-high F & pull out the Bb-slides. The sound
fits the Bach music much better.

But be careful, it would be disastrous to practice on these horns. They
ruin the embouchure as one wants to compensate for the missing overtones
by forcing the sound.

Better just practise the part by reading it. Make your warm up (if
necessary) on the regular horn, take the descant just for the rehearsal
& for the performance.

Good luck.

Hans

PS: the 2nd horn must use a descant too for the same light sound.

Hi all,

I can't seem to find a score for Bach Cantata 112 locally, except for
piano scores.

Can anyone tell me what key the horn part is in and if it's a screamer?

Please tell me it's not as hard as Cantata 87...

It is not one of the most difficult Bach works by any means, but it does
present its challenges. The work calls for two horns in G, and while
the top notes are only written high C's (F-horn D's) there are plenty of
those.

>Please tell me it's not as hard as Cantata 87...

Hmm... 87 is about as horn-friendly as they come, as there are no horn
parts.

If you are doing much Bach work, you might want to invest in the Musica
Rara complete Bach repertoire volumes, which you can find at:
