Re: [Hornlist] Strauss 2 and En Foret; and a complaint
Hi, Chris, Yes, in the B H edition, there are a few misprints. The note you ask about is played a concert F in the two recordings I have (Barry Tuckwell, 1990, and Peter Damm). In the CD liner notes of the Tuckwell recording, he slams BH and their errors in the score, regarding notes, phrasings, dynamics and tempos (tempi?). I can't comment on En Foret ... somehow, I made it all the way through grad school without ever seeing the piece. A pet peeve of mine ... I have the BBC issued CD of Dennis Brain playing Beethoven Sextet Op. 81b, Auf dem Strom and Haydn 1, among other things. Amongst the liner notes are some photos of DB with other musicians ... who shall remain nameless, because there are no captions. Thanks, BBC. Supplying few names would be nice. Maybe some of the UK groupies could help. There. Now I feel better. This might be opening a can of worms but does anyone know of any misprints in Strauss 2 (Boosey Hawkes) and the Bozza En Foret (Alphonse Leduc)? I especially wanted to know about the last eighth note of the bar before 36 in the last movement of the Strauss. I'm sure it must go back to an F concert but it is printed as an F-sharp concert in both the score and the horn part. The F-sharp works in a weird kind of way. I'm also wondering what people think about going down to a low A in the second horn call near the end of the Bozza. It is printed as the A just below middle C. Some go down to the low A. I'm curious why, in such a tour de force, that Bozza would have written the low A anyway. Thanks in advance! Hi all, There is a misprint in En Foret, I believe, in the 5th bar of reh. 17 on the second beat. That note should be a written Bb, sounding Eb. Hope your summers are all good. Bob ** Robert N. RE: [Hornlist] Strauss 2
I certainly have the original solo part. I would have looked at my part, but I didn't have it with me (in another country) because I have it memorized to the point of being able to rewrite it, dynamic markings, tempo markings, everything, from memory. That is why I was asking. If I were at home, of course I would have looked at the original part. It was unavailable to me. Re: [Hornlist] Strauss 2
Correction...The orchestral parts are rental only. I believe there is a mini score available for purchase and the solo part with piano reduction from Boosey. Currently Boosey is distributed through Hal Leonard if your music store has trouble finding them. AO On 12/14/07, Andrew Otman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Amy, It is rental only from Boosey and Hawkes. Re: [Hornlist] Strauss 2 Slow Movement (long-ish)
Just go check out the facsimile of the horn part that was use for the first performances of this concerto by Gottfried von Freiburg. The second movement is posted here on Hans Pizka's website: http://www.pizka.de/RStr2-4.htm For the second movement, there are breath marks inserted that are quite logical and make the phrasing easy to follow. Re: [Hornlist] Strauss 2 Slow Movement (long-ish)
Hello Pete I'm aware of the facsimile and its phrasing - I also have a copy of Hans Pizka's own part which he used in his recording in the 60's. Barry Tuckwell thinks that the published edition is often inaccurate in respect of the original manuscript. Of course the printed score may be wrong, or simply reflect corrections made during the publication process, but I still think that it repays looking carefully at the whole structure rather than just from the soloist's viewpoint. Does anyone have an accurate publication history of the work, from when the MS was sent to BH and what revisions were made by Strauss himself? Re: [Hornlist] Strauss 2 Slow Movement (long-ish)
Hi tooters, again I just listened to Tuckwell's 1990 (?) recording of the Strauss - and at figure 24 he observes the phrasing exactly as in the score, and it blends beautifully with the WW. Later on he diverges slightly (figure 27), but now as the single solo line he can be more liberal.
