MANILA, Philippines — The tropical cyclone "Maysak" over the northwest
Pacific Ocean continued to intensify into a super typhoon on Tuesday, the
United States' Joint Typhoon Warning Center said.

Within 24 hours, the agency indicated Maysak may reach maximum sustained

[HOT] HOT Summit 2015 Program Announcement

2015-03-31 Thread Blake Girardot
Hi everyone,

The HOT Summit 2015 program is taking shape and it is really impressive.

I would try and list some of the highlights here, but I am not kidding
when I say that with over 20 presentations, classes and workshops
schedule so far, it would be hard to pick the highlights, they are all
pretty great.

While I am not surprised, I am very excited there will be such a wide
range of experts at the Summit with a very diverse and interesting set
of topics.

If there is any way you can attend, I really encourage you to do so.
Heck, after you read the program you won't need any encouragement I am
sure:

http://summit.hotosm.org/program/

And it is only going to get better as we finalize our arrangements
with the keynote speakers for the first day of the conference.

I know it is an over used phrase, but this really is an amazing
opportunity to meet, learn, and share with some of the top people in
their fields, community leaders from around the world and mappers just
like yourself.

More information will follow, but we just completed the main program
this weekend and wanted to get it out right away while we finalize
some details on the lead off day.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Blake Girardot

[HOT] Issue with the HOT Export shapefiles and ArcGIS

2015-03-31 Thread Severin Menard
Hi,

Am I the only one experiencing a projection issue in ArcGIS with the
shapefiles made by the HOT Exports? The (deprecated) EPSG:3785 is not
recognized by ArcGIS (but is by QGIS), therefore the shapefiles are not
projected. I do not use ArcGIS but I expect a huge majority of GIS officers
in humanitarian organization rely on it, so this issue is really a "killer
costumer". The tip I found is to display the shapefile first in QGIS then
save it in any other CRS (Coordinate Reference System), but it is obviously
satisfying for the (many) people with ArcGIS only. I think EPSG:3785 should
be changed by EPSG:3857 anyway if we continue to rely on this projection
for GIS files. GReat it is tagged as a "must" (fix). Who would be
interested to dig in? I can provide the information text for any techy not
completely familiar with CRS, if needed.

Sincerely,

Severin

[HOT] Reminder: Weekly Activation Working Group

2015-03-31 Thread Severin Menard
Hi all,

The Activation Working Group Weekly meeting will occur in about 35 minutes,
2PM UTC.

There is also a possibility to alternate with another time slot, eg
alternating every week, to allow people for whom the current time is too
early or too late to participate. We decided the best way to figure out if
it would interest people and what time would then fit the most, here is a
Doodle to evaluate it. So far 4 people
filled it. You should see the time zone on the far right and you need to
double check it is your time zone.

Does someone know a good tool that would not be Google based to send
reminders to the list for the WG meetings?

Sincerely,

Severin

Re: [HOT] Mapping IDP camps in Maguindanao, Philippines

2015-03-31 Thread maning sambale
Dear everyone,

As always, thank you to the 10 contributors [0] who are helping with this task.
I just uploaded some mapillary photos to help guide mappers what some
of the features look like on the ground.
Links are in the Instruction tab of the task [1].

We are hoping the holy week ceasefire will decrease the military
offensive [2] but IDP situation on the ground is not any way better.
Once again this is not an urgent task nor a formal activation, but we
appreciate any help you can extend.
