[HOT] Situational awareness regarding weather events

2015-04-21 Thread Ethan Nelson
Hi HOT list,

I've talked to a few people about this but I am interested in getting responses
from a broader audience. Many of the HOT activations in the past have been the
result of weather events: typhoons and hurricanes, flooding, and droughts.

Thus, I am reaching out to get a feel for how information is gathered about
current and future weather by activation managers and the other powers-that-be.
Is it generally through news agencies, like when a potential threat reaches the
critical mass to have coverage devoted to it? Are their briefings or
notifications occurring from partner agencies? Does someone perform
surveillance of regions on a daily/weekly basis from personal online searches
or from weather agencies?

I've been on the activating-to-map side of HOT for a while in my spare time.
But, professionally, I work with weather data and models daily...it's what I
research and study. I recently started thinking about a HOT weather briefing
site that compiles information and images for the short and long term about
the atmospheric state. This would be a one stop shop reference site that
activation managers, or anyone really, could consult to become aware of the
weather situation globally.

Is this worth pursuing or does it duplicate efforts already present? I would
appreciate your thoughts regarding both sets of questions, either on or off
list.

Best,

Ethan aka FTA

Re: [HOT] Slum mapping project need help to imagery stitching

2015-04-21 Thread Denis Carriere
Awesome work everyone, the imagery looks great on JOSM! Well done to
everyone that was involved in making this happen.

@Humberto: For your next mapping party, you should consider including an
appropriate *source *tagging schema.

building=yes
source=techo.org
date=2015-03-16

If imagery was collected by techo, they should at least be included in the
source for some recognition.

Great work again!

Hi Ethan,

HOT doesn't really have any formal monitoring that we do per-se,
although there is a lot of informal monitoring simply because we are
many people who all follow the news and current events to some degree.
So generally anything we might be interested in tends to get noticed
by someone fairly quickly.

I myself have an RSS feed that is the combined output of the USGS
earthquake feed, plus the BBC news feed filtered to only show things
with keywords like 'flood', 'hurricane', 'militants', etc. I had
meant to make the feed more complete but I kind of ran out of ideas
for what else to add.

Generally for most things the news (at least early reports) is quick
enough for us to get started; more monitoring might be nice, but we
are pretty quick anyway so it is hard to improve much.

to face this issue !!!

Thanks Kevin for your suggestion. i already have requested Mapbox to update

Looking at the area in this funny old bing analyzer tool would suggest the
same. The area used to be hi-res and is not now hi-res, hence you can zoom
in on some patches of green here, and they turn red.

 http://ant.dev.openstreetmap.org/bingimageanalyzer/?lat=23.773877390904328lon=90.25749206542969zoom=13l=bing

It's only a narrow strip missing about 5 km wide.

 http://harrywood.co.uk/maps/bingosm.html?zoom=14lat=23.7852lon=90.2291

 so that's annoying for you.

Not much can be done about it, although I think we've seen this before
with bing, and a degrading in coverage has occurred just before they do an
update with much improved imagery. So fingers crossed that's what is
 happening.

 Harry

 Hi Ahasan,

When did you last see imagery in that area? It is my understanding from
reading some of the other OSM community mailing lists that the recent Bing
maps update has made high resolution imagery for certain areas no longer
 available.

 Hi Ralph,

It depends on the local usage of the data. For example in programs that us

turned into points prior to the analysis.

People should map as accurately as they can, but if mapping buildings as
points is the best you can do and works for how the data will be used then
no problem. If someone else needs outlines they can always upgrade the
 mapping later.

The mapping of the shape and size of buildings for HOT is not for visual
 purposes.

Ivan Gayton of Medicin Sans Frontiers has reported back to us that this is
important for their work in certain areas. They use the size of the
building to assess the number of occupants (as in the case of round huts
for example) or to assess it's use (small round huts are usually grain
stores) and also the size and shape gives them reference points for
establishing their exact position and orientation on the ground

you must add: --force-focal x after run.pl

From OpenDroneMap mailing list a suggestion is tu use x value between 9
and 11 mm

Please let us know if is possible to create a point cloud model.
