Re: [HOT] EFF Privacybadger blocks OSM on uakemap.org
Well, I assumed it had automatic updates. But I'm also using Firefox, does anybody know if those are updated at the same time? Last update for me is 2. April so woudld make sense that I don't have the fix, just seems bad when I have to do that manually. On 5/24/15 21:07 , Dan S wrote: Hi, Did you install Privacy Badger recently, or a long time ago? Re: [HOT] Database, OSM HOT (Was: Request for information about common set of tags for HOT)
Oops, now I see that they are not even in Nepal. Does each project have its own set of terminology? Are we certain that some emergency landing sites were not given different tags by different mappers as this flexibility seems to be viewed as beneficial. The idea is certainly not for very project to have its own tags and we try to avoid it whenever possible, even try to merge tags when we see there are similar meanings (which isn't easy, because mass edits aren't allowed unless you basically get 100% support) What usually happens is that there is local demand to tag something and then people come up with a tag. Unfortunately people often forget to document it as you already figured out, if there had been a wiki page for landing_site and it had been linked on aeroway=helipad someone from HOT might have found that tag. To me this just demonstrates the chaotic nature of the tagging scheme, little consistency or documentation. However, if it appears to work then it works. It's certainly a issue and HOT is certainly not the project doing the best job when it comes to documentation (Well, it's often documented somewhere, but not easy to find). Most mappers usually care about their area, which means HOT can often get away with strange tags or tags that have not been discussed, because they don't pop up in the neighbourhood of mappers in Europe. I mean of you started tagging amenity=kitchen in Germany you would have a 10 page discussion of what kind of kitchen that is, who has access etc. Cheers, Andi __ openstreetmap.org/user/AndiG88 wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:AndiG88 ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
Re: [HOT] Database, OSM HOT (Was: Request for information about common set of tags for HOT)
I see that the open, flexible nature of the tag approach has its merits I suppose. The enduring mystery for me is how is this information used in a query? But maybe I am barking up the wrong tree here, perhaps this concept is only used for labeling features, and querying to select the data subset is not a common task. Re: [HOT] Database, OSM HOT (Was: Request for information about common set of tags for HOT)
I have to admit I never saw either one, but honestly I'm also not sure what I would have replyed. The older one is kinda like what tagging do I prefer, but at the same time not making clear what HOT and people using the data need, especially when it comes to routing. I mean if it already starts with they may do that and they may do that... And I think the reason there was little feedback for the recent mail is probably because it looked fine to most people. The majority of mappers there are not really involved in crisis mapping and if they are will just do the tasks. Not to mention that it's a giant wall of text which never helps. And you are also kinda left alone with the links. I think it really lacked a comparison between what has been used and was not good and why this new tagging is better. When it comes to Tagging you always have to explain what has been used in the past, what you propose, what are obvious alternatives, what should no longer be used, why you propose it, how it will be used etc. What I still don't see are Wiki pages for the Keys/Tags. Just create them when they already are in the database. And create the proposal. And I also think there are a lot of Tags outside of this life cycle which are far easier to document. And to be honest I can't remember ever having seen any HOT topics on the tagging mailinglist (apart from the 1 I posted), where you could discuss Tags used for both conventinal as well as crisis mapping and discuss where do use established tags and where to use new ones. Re: [HOT] Request for information about common set of tags for HOT (Was: OSM Nepal Reponse - Links to various infos)
there seems to be little information related to the emergency relief effort. In over 366,000 records there are only 19 marked as aeroway = helipad. I already brought this up on the tagging mailinglist. The problem is that someone had the great idea to tag those as leisure=common, which is honestly one of the worst defined and most abigious OSM Tags in geneal (in my opinion this is a UK only tag due to legal implications), just check out the Wiki. And what makes it really bad is that you can correctly tag places as leisure=common where no helicopter can land. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:leisure%3Dcommon Now aeroway=helipad probablay wasn't used, because it's really meant for places designed and designated for a helicopter to land not just where it could land. Even though the decription isn't that clear, I think it was the correct move not to use it. The question is why not have a new tag? And then it actually turned out that in Poland they are already using a Tag that could have been used by HOT: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:emergency%3Dlanding_site __ openstreetmap.org/user/AndiG88 wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:AndiG88 ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
[HOT] Wiki: HOT UserBox
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Template:HOT_UserBox I just realized that if you use this template on your user page, then it will be in the Humanitarian OSM Team category. I don't think that should happen and I guess with the [[Category:{{{1}}} Volunteers{{!}}{{PAGENAME}}]] that also was somehow the intention, but that doesn't work, because many people don't enter the optional parameter. I'm not an expert with those templates, but maybe someone could edit it so by default it says Category: HOT volunteer and make that a sub category. Also for the official members it might also be better to have category HOT board members as Humanitarian OSM Team doesn't really stand for the team. Because right now the category isn't the usefull with all the users: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Humanitarian_OSM_Team __ openstreetmap.org/user/AndiG88 wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:AndiG88 ___ HOT mailing list HOT@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot
