Hi,

we decided to prepare for more fine grained permissions handling system for
HOTOSM organization on GitHub. At the moment, new permissions system is not
yet available [0], so we are going to implement following policy in the
transition period:

The policy:

If your current permissions don't provide sufficient level of access to the
HOTOSM repositories, you need to send an email to tec...@hotosm.org and
explain what you need.

Hi,

you can test the interface on http://tasks.dev.hotosm.org/, just share your
OSM username so I can add you to the 'Project manager' role.

Translations need to be updated on the server, to actually check the GUI. I
think wait for a few days to at least get some translations.

[HOT] HOT Exports service

Hi all,

exports service has been on it's limits of available disk space. In order to
make it more sustainable I've removed and disabled PostGIS dump file and
Spatialite file formats. So, any new export runs will no longer generate
those two formats, and those file have been deleted for every export job/run
on the system.

If anyone needs these formats it's always possible to use QGIS and convert SHP
files manually.

[HOT] HOT Projects issues triaging - first iteration

2014-09-26 Thread Dražen Odobašić
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

first of all I would like to thank everyone who participated during first
iteration of HOT Projects issues triaging.

On the first iteration we discussed how to actually approach issue triaging
and what should be our results. Eventually, we agreed on using waffle service
[0] as a kanban style whiteboard. The board was divided into 4 priority
columns (low, medium, high, critical) which were used to triage issues.

After 2h of discussions on Mumble we managed to triage 36 out of 66 issues
available at that moment [1]. We also discussed how to use tags in order to
categorize and give more depth to the issues.

Others will probably have more comments, so here are my personal remarks:

* We need to prepare better before the actual meeting, some of the issues are
simple, others have long comments thread that span over couple of months, so
it's not simple to just glance over and make a decision. This should be a task
for the project manager. On the other hand, we could just tag those kinda
issues as 'needs disscussion' (or even create another column and move them
there).

* We need to define which tags (and colors) and combinations of tags are
'officially' used across all HOT projects. For example: priority (low, medium,
high, critical), difficulty (easy, complex), component (ui, backend), ...

* I'm not sure if we used the possibility to order issues in columns, maybe
that could be used to signify priority with in a priority column.

* To use waffle an GH user must have 'Write access' to the repository

* One of the issues with waffle is that any changes to the issues on GH, will
directly affect placement on waffle board. WE could probably limit that by
using a fine-grained privileges on each repository and mange who has write
access. Also I'm not sure who can update labels, as labels are used to link
issues with boards on waffle service.

* Using waffle for issue triaging kinda limit it's usage as a kanban board
which usually has Ready, In Progress and Done columns to keep track of what's
happening. We could always add those columns or even manually reconfigure
existing columns and toggle between 'working' and 'triaging' modes.

* IRC is to slow for issue triaging, Mumble is much better

The second issue triaging iteration is scheduled for 2nd, October 2014 @ 17:00
UTC on Mumble [2]. The idea is to start with hot-exports [3] and then move
onto other HOT projects.

A short remainder for HOT Projects issues triaging meeting which is TODAY at
17:00 UTC [0] on the HOT Mumble server [1].

To facilitate issue triaging we will use http://waffle.io service, for example
https://waffle.io/hotosm/hot-exports. In order to manipulate 'issue cards' you
need to have 'write privileges' for the specific repository, and that is
easily fixable if you have an Github account. Columns are easily customizable
and we can link specific columns and issues using labels.

We'll also use hackpad service for documentation and coordination.

  * busy preparing HOT GeoNode instance (http://geonode.org/)

  * hot-export - activated job_deprecation policy
* suggested to prefix export jobs which need to be archived with
'[Archive]' - requires an update to the SQL query, simplest solution at the

sev_hotosm:
  * will provide a comma separated list of job_ids which we want to 'archive'
- - jobs will never be deprecated

[HOT] HOT Projects issues triaging

2014-09-23 Thread Dražen Odobašić
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

we are going to have HOT Projects issues triaging on Thursday, 25th
September, 2014 [0].

The purpose of this meeting is to do quick review and prioritization of issues
reported on Github in order to get context straight. We need to do this to be
able to draw up priorities, solicit feedback and ultimately start thinking
about funding.

This meeting is for you if:
* you are a HOT project manager
* you reported issues and want to help with triaging

At the moment meeting will happen on the HOT Mumble server [1], and in case
that does not workout, we can always default back to IRC #h...@irc.oftc.net

There will be more information regarding tools and services used to facilitate
issue triaging in the folloe-up email.

Hi Blake,

any community effort is greatly appreciated.

You can open a hackpad document or some other collaborative editing service
and start reviewing issues and enhancements for the tasking manager.

It would also help if you can attend the meeting on Thursday.

[HOT] HOT-Exports job deprecation policy update

2014-09-17 Thread Dražen Odobašić
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

we recently updated and implemented [0] on the hot-exports service. The
hot_purge_exports cron job for the 'hot' user will run every Saturday at
01:00.

The deprecation script will purge any job marked as 'deleted' after 30 days of
inactivity. Purging deletes every record from the database and removes
exported files. The second part of job deprecation script marks every job as
deleted if there were no new runs in the last 180 days, effectively setting it
up for the purging. Job owners have 30 days to 'undelete' the job and create a
new run, which will suppress purging and deprecation policy.

This will effectively remove, at the moment, 3430 jobs and their runs, for
example take a look at [1]. Unless 'undeleted' jobs will be purged on 11. 10.
2014.

[HOT] OSM Tasking Manager localization updates

2014-08-06 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Hi all,

not sure if you noticed but we started using Transifex service for localization
coordination [0]. There are two translatable resources *master* and *current*.
Master represents current project development which will be deployed to the
http://tasks.hotosm.org. Current represents currently deployed OSMTM.

Master resource will be continuously updated during a development cycle, and
once it gets deployed it will become the *current* resource. This enables
translators to quickly fix broken or missing translations in the *current*
resource as translations can be easily updated. At the same time translators can
work on new translations in the *master* resource.

Any new languages should be added to the *master* resource. It's technically
possible to migrate translations from *master* resource to the *current*
resource, however, it's also possible that some translation will be missing
after the migration.

Happy localization,

Dražen

[HOT] HOT Imagery Request service - Test

2014-05-21 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Hi,

today Igor implemented some of the features and fixed some bugs. Most notable
changes are:
* add Bing image age overlay (source: http://mvexel.dev.openstreetmap.org/bing/)
* main menu is moved form the sidebar to the header
* imagery request areas are shown as markers on small scales, making them
visible on a world map
* map height on the main page adjusts automatically to browser window height

Please check it out, and use GitHub issue page to discuss/comment about
enhancements, bugs, etc. https://github.com/candela-it/hirc/issues

at the moment browsing (request detail view) is integrated with comments and
answers, maybe we should create a coarse request overview which should just
show title, description and a map, and keep comments/answers behind login?

Menu was just an idea, as we were playing with Semantic UI framework modules,
maybe we should just put main links back to the header...

Front page map shows clickable imagery requests geometry... once you are logged
in :)

Maybe we could move technical/enhancement/bug disscussions to GitHub issue
tracker?

One thing that is still hidden, is administration for questions and question
sets, request statut, it's supposed to be accessible for admin users... so if
you want to check it out... shout...

[HOT] Invitation - HOT Imagery requests coordination service

2014-05-16 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Hi,

this Sunday (May, 18th 2014), starting at 8:00 UTC, you are invited to
participate in an intense one-day hackathon to bootstrap HOT Imagery requests
coordination service (HIRC?).

We have been working on a specification document [0] that has more information
about what's needed and how should we actually do it. You are free to add
content, comment and discuss the document. For example, maybe you could create
some UI wireframes.

Development is going to be on Python/Djangom which is the technology stack we
(me and 3 other guys from Croatia) have most experience with.

I'm not sure how are we exactly going to organize such intense distributed
hacking effort, but we can at least try. IRC/mumble/hackpad are probably our
safest choices at the moment.

I'll start preparing 'How to get started/contribute' document and initialize the
code repository.

[HOT] Tech working group reboot

2014-05-10 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Hi,

in the current process of rebooting working groups, we were kindly asked by our
board representative to prepare a short terms of reference document. The
document should provide answers to questions like: how is the group organized?
ie. meeting frequency, where, who leads the group, where are logs and updates
kept, what other tools used to organize (ie. github)

I've started preparing a document on hackpad [0], if you are interested please
review and update the document. In case you want to discuss about it, hop on IRC
#hot.

Re: [HOT] HOT Tech WG Meeting X+10

2014-05-09 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Long overdue Tech WG IRC meeting X+10: Summary

pgiraud:
  * reports that development of TMv2 is moving along nicely

mkl:
  * reports on the progress to secure funding for the second part of TMv2
project
  * mentions that old HOT OpenAtrium has been taken down and we need to host it
on the server as an archive
  * discussion about an imagery request coordination tool
https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/hot/2014-April/004993.html
  * initial proof of concept based on github
  * created https://github.com/hotosm/imagery-requests to track issues

wonderchook:
  * raises an issue what happens to the IRs which are private, maybe create a
private GH repo
* we should then start paying for GH account
  * reports that OpenAearialMap rebirth will be happening, as a reply to
@dodobas idea to integrate imagery request coordination tool into OAM

AndrewBuck:
  * mentions that he'd been talking with Mark Cupitt who is willing to work
donate developer time
  * raises a question to move TechWG meetings to mumble, however, follow on
discussion concludes we should stay on IRC
  * added bots to the mumble service:
* bot that just repeats any text messages said in one channel to all linked
channels, the same as the voice does
* bot lets you set a 'status' next to your name with a chat command

ybon:
  * made some on the fly changes on cartocss style and looked at the code of the
TMv2 with pgiraud

dodobas:
  * deployed OpenAtriumV2 on http://openatrium.hotosm.org/
  * fixed a few issues on TMv1 production instance
* SQLAlchemy version mismatch on the Tasking Manager, application internal
signals were not firing as advertised
* there was an 'DDOS' like attack on TMv1, which crashed the instance so we
now have 20req/s limit per IP address, which works fine for normal usage
patterns
  * fixed a few small TMv1 issues on GH and deployed the code to production
  * reconfigured mumble service and added a few bots @AndrewBuck
  * @clara reports - japanese and spanish languages are available on
www.hotosm.org web site

russdeffner:
  * proposes to add products and services page on the LearnOSM which starts off
a discussion about the need to better communicate with the general public,
people outside of technical groups... does our web presence sufficiently
explain...

Re: [HOT] HOT Tech WG Meeting X+11

2014-05-09 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Tech WG IRC meeting X+11: Summary

dodobas:
  * updated OpenAtrium2 setup and enabled 'reply by email' module/feature
  * reconfigured OSMTMv1 service to auto-kill/restart zombie processes... making
it more durable, as there are some issues when admin users try to create new
jobs using osm relation ids...
  * added South America to the HOT export service
  * worked on creating export service testing instance so designers can work on
the site redesign
  * created HOTOSM Tranifex organization and initially created hot-export
translation project - https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/hot-export/
  * implemented data purging policy for export service
https://github.com/hotosm/hot-exports/issues/70
  * finally switched export service code to the public GH repo, as it was still
on private git repo of the company which initially developed the service
  * discussed with @AndrewBuck and @mkl about resources needed to create the
export service for the whole world, some remarks:
* it was never designed for that initially, it was designed to accommodate
fast data updates/export for small areas
* it will probably work but we will add more overhead to the update/export
pipeline, which currently takes ~20min - export server is 'lagging' at least
20mi nbehind live OSM data

clara:
  * worked on proper multilingual version of hot.osm.org - it needs manually
re-adding the translation for 8 updates, and then translating the menu items etc
to which ever languages ppl want

mkl:
  * asks to create a few documents requested by the board:
* mandate of the group. basically what is the purpose of the group, what
is it responsible for, what does it hope to accomplish
* how is the group organized? ie meeting frequency, where, who leads the
group, where are logs and updates kept, what other tools used to organize (ie
github)
* @dodobas proposes to create a hackpad document and start collaborating
  * starts discussion about TMv2
* getting osmtm v2 to launch
* coordinating a software management process from here on
* starting a design and ux discussion

pierregiraud:
  * first phase is complete, added 2-Clause BSD licence (@HOT choice at the
moment)
  * discussed about software version management, should we tag HOT software
using versions, how do we keep track of the software development
* @dodobas milestones are not useful for dispersed HOT developer community,
they are more useful for paid development, tags could be used for big code
pushes (new features, new design)
* @dodobas proposed to appoint project managers which would, 'as mandated',
created bi-monthly project status reports like ... 10 issues are opened, 2 have
been closed, high priorities are...
  * proposed to move GH repo from his user to hotosm
  * asked if we could integrate transifex translation service for TMv2
  * nor sure about whether to use google analytics or HOT hosted piwik, maybe we
could run those in parallel

MoniqueMitchell:
  * I'm a graduate student taking a Social Computing class at CU, a group of
myself and 5 other graduate students have been looking at the TM /HOT org with
the hopes of making some recommendations with the hope of improving the user
experience...
  * the nature of a semester project, as part of The EPIC project at CU, which
our professor runs
  * some initial ideas here if you are interested:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a-F-yNrFzgJ6JogLuURCnxOsqUhTG0gLkjjU04xh8WY/edit

AndrewBuck:
  * discussed about improving todo plugin in josm with @ptressel
  * maybe integrate it with TM to show grid of tasking areas which are being
worked on, or which are available

[HOT] Transifex translation service for HOT projects

2014-05-01 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Hi all,

we are going to try to use Transifex localization service to maintain and
improve HOT project localization. Transifex is essentially a paid service,
however it's free for open-source projects. There is also an open-source code
repository https://github.com/transifex/

Transifex service has an command line utility which enables, almost unattended,
localizations integration. The drawback is that we should let the CLI utility to
handle all translations, making Transifex the only source of translations. I'm
not sure how are we going to handle translation file merging, and how does
Transifex work when we remove some strings/terms from the initial source files
(English).

At the moment, I've only configured hot-export project and it's quite easy to
add new languages. https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/hot-export/

I've also noticed that some of strings/terms are not really used, so we probably
should do some spring cleaning.

Hi Jaakko,

that area is simply overlapping, so it's visualized oddly, as those are two
different extracts... 'South and Central America' and 'Haiti and the Caribbean'
that encapsulate the same area. Bottom line, exports will work :)

Ok, found out what is the problem... relation is just too complex... so it can't
be quickly processed by the system... eventually the system will just give up..

I should really look into how to limit 'max processing time per request' and
kill the request, not sure what is happening in the source code.

You should manually draw the outlines... if you can

[HOT] Tasking Manager - service update - request limitation

To help maintain service availability we introduced a limit of 10 requests per
