IMHO volunteering and crowd activities are
 inconsistent with a dynastic leadership.

And this makes it a great reason to build the volunteer culture there.
Positive change starts with small steps.

Re: [HOT] HOT in MENA

2015-07-08 Thread Heather Leson
Thanks so much all for your comments.

There are various groups in the MENA region who do open source projects. We
have Drupal and Creative Commons meetups in Doha. There is an earnest
desire to learn and contribute. When I presented HOT's work to various
groups, people said that they would like to learn how to participate in a
global community and the activation projects. It is very much a
relationship based culture, so in person trainings and mapping would be
beneficial. This is why I am seeking allies.

In Qatar there is a nascent group of folks who review OSM. Some of them are
from my workplace, which is why I am excited to see what we can do in terms
of connecting people to OSM.

Regarding the World Humanitarian Youth Summit, this was something that the
UN planned. Personally I think it is great to get young people in the
region engaged in humanitarian discussions and be leaders. Reach out to
Asia and other groups have plans to that end. There is a large mobile tech
and youth population in this region. If you read the MENA consultation
documents you will see that there is really a need to support local
connection to global youth.

Thanks in advance if you have ideas that you want to post to this thread or
if you want to contact me offlist

Heather

 Hello Ahmed,

I'm wondering if there is any country in the world which hasn't a skeleton
in the closet. Maybe HOT should choose the moon as the next meeting
 location. Sorry for my cynicism.

 Hello Heather,

AFAIK Qatar is a monarchy spending more money in doing disasters [1], than
in relief. Did you evaluate this in promoting Doha for a meeting on
crowdsourcing projects? Not to mention foreign workers conditions,
journalist jailing etc. IMHO volunteering and crowd activities are
 inconsistent with a dynastic leadership.

I'm sorry for Qatari Red Crescent, but I think HOT OSM should avoid this
 location.

 yf,
 Ahmed

 Hi!

Are you involved in HOT and live in the MENA region? As some of you know,
I live in Doha, Qatar. One of my personal goals is to support the growth of
Digital Humanitarians in the region. This means having some regional based
mappers connect and talk about how we can collaborate some. I am already
looking into Arabic translation for some core items. [1]Of course, it makes
sense that we work on projects with our remote allies.

The World Humanitarian Youth Summit will be in Doha in September. There
are opportunities for booths to demo work. For me this is something that
the community could get involved in. Maybe we could inspire young leaders
to learn to map and to join OSM.

 Hope to hear from you,
