[HOT] Where to start?

2014-10-18 Thread john whelan
Probably sounds dumb but I'll ask the question anyway. I'm a fairly
experienced OSM mapper mainly doing CANVEC imports and tagging details
working in JOSM so if I have have a bit of time available where is the most
appropriate place to start thinking in terms of CANVEC isn't available so
the process will be different, so where/how do you suggest I start?

Thanks John

Hi John,

Have you taken a look at the Tasking Managner? http://tasks.hotosm.org/

If you login there with your OSM account you'll see instructions for
various tasks. You can then pick one it checkout an area to work on.

Does that make sense?

Best,

I've picked up a task,
699 - Ebola Outbreak, ETC Locations Context - Experienced Mappers Only so
started up JOSM and imaged with Bing, the square I'm looking at looks as if
the basic road network is in already and many of the buildings are in as
well. I can see a need for tags but short of being on the ground I can't
think of a way to find out the information.

Perhaps I'll try another task.

Hi John,

Even though you are an experienced mapper perhaps start with a beginner
task. It is harder to identify feature of places you have never been though
really it is just a matter of practice.

I had a look at a couple of those, drop roads in, even looking at those I

Hi John
Your experience could also be used for some import tasks.

For the West Ebola oubreak response, we have Import tasks that we reserve
to experienced mappers. They are private jobs. If you are interestd to
contribute to these tasks, simply answer me providing your OSM account. You
will find detailed instructions in the Task Jobs. Plus a group of
experienced mappers is there to support for this.

To revise the place names, the contributor have to compare in JOSM layers
from various sources. There is the Bing Imagery, GNS places names and
actually for Liberia UNMIL place names. You have to decide which name to
attribute and revise the tags.

Re: [HOT] Where to start?

2014-10-18 Thread Dan S
Hi John,

On some tasks, you do often see that a lot of the data is already
there, due to previous mapping. Sometimes all the job is recently done
but for some reason it hasn't been marked as "Done" - we suspect that
sometimes people aren't sure that they've really done everything in
the square. If you look at a square and you're confident that the
instructions have already been carried out for this square (no
villages missed, etc) then it's valuable to us when you mark it as
"Done"... even if it wasn't you that did it!

Also you may also see comments alongside the square, which might give
you clues about specific things still to be done.

Best
Dan

Re: [HOT] Where to start?

2014-10-18 Thread john whelan
That makes a lot of sense. I think there is a need for better meta data if
that is the term, if we are mapping from satellite or even Bing sometimes
it is not clear if something is a track, a footpath, or an unpaved road so
some guidance on how to tag might be useful. My personal preference would
be highway=unclassified, anything else is more a guess even if its an
intelligent one. Yes I can see there are guidelines for Highway_Tag_Africa
but from imagery it can be difficult to decide exactly the right one.

Huts? I've tagged building=house again really it needs some guidelines /
standard to be more useful.

HOT tasks with high detail imagery are probably the ones that mappers can
work more quickly and accurately on, cloudy Bing Satellite might be in the
right place but given the resources available I'd go for the high detail
imagery ones every time.

Perhaps what we need are teams? with a project leader to keep on top of
what is happening and to select the next bit to map even the images
available, the importance and the capabilities of the mappers.

In Africa, roads shouldn't be classified based on their conditions,
width, surface, etc, but, as it is stated in the Highway_Tag_Africa
wiki, the main source of classification should be their importance in
the communication among towns and villages. It takes some time to
adapt when coming from mapping in developed countries.

Do your best. Most dwellings are huts in rural Africa.

Welcome to the world of imagery scarcity ;)

Many jobs in the Tasking Manager are part of a HOT activation. Every
activation is coordinated by one or two people. For example, the Ebola
activation is coordinated by Pierre Béland and Andrew Buck.

In the context of Activations in particular, it is important to make an
effort to classify the roads the best we can. This can make the
difference for humanitarian organizations that have to reach these
places.
From imagery, in general we can see if a road is large enough for a car to
circulate. It is important to take the time to compare various zones to
have the capacity to distinguish between a road and a path. If it does
not seem large enough for a car to circulate, we then apply a tag highway=path.
