Thanks for that link.
I figured they may well have been pioneers in this area, since they tend to 
have lots of valuable visual data, lots of time to plan and process, lots 
of technical expertise, lots of money to throw at the problem, and have 
probably been working on it for 50 or 60 years.
On the other hand they also tend to look for expertise wherever it takes 
them.

I'm sure they use their own software.

James Canvin stitches lots of panoramas from mars that NASA shoot but don't
release: http://www.nivnac.co.uk/mer/index.php

At least he used to use Hugin for this, I'm not sure of that is still the
case.

image data they get back from the Mars rover?
