Dear all, Today eight platoons of police tried to enter the forests around Nuagaon to fell more trees and were met with strong protests by the people of Nuagaon, particularly women. The entirely male police force - without any women police - then lathi charged the women. Many sustained injuries in the process and one woman was seriously injured; she has now been hospitalised. Following the lathi charge the entire village mobilised to support for the protest and the police were forced to retreat. They left after promising the people that they will not come again. When asked what their demand is, the people protesting demanded that the police and administration should get out of their village and not come back again. The handful of pro POSCO UAC leaders in the village remained silent during these events.
