[IAEP] More new and revised chapters of Make Your Own Sugar Activities! ready for review, feedback

2010-02-03 Thread Jim Simmons
In this latest draft I have added a not quite complete chapter on
Making Shared Activities. The part that is missing is on using DBus
Tubes to remotely call methods, and it's missing because I've never
done it. I do plan to learn how to do this, come up with a decent
example program (something fancier than Hello Mesh), and write it up
in the book, but it will take awhile. The new draft is at:

http://objavi.flossmanuals.net/books/ActivitiesGuideSugar-en-2010.02.03-18.11.39.pdf

I found out yesterday that copying code from PDF's, either the OBJAVI!
version here or the one the Floss Manuals website produces, does NOT
work. In one case you get garbage and in the second you get code with
no indents. I have set up a Git repository for the sample code in the
book and I will change all the references to copying and pasting code
to Open file name in the Git project you downloaded.

I actually had to learn things about Activity Sharing to write the new
chapter, so I am VERY concerned that what I think I learned is
correct. I don't want to lead anyone astray!

I have reached the point in the book where the stuff I already know is
pretty much done. From now on I'll be learning as I go. If you've
been giving this project the benefit of the doubt now is a good time
to stop doing that.

Thanks,

James Simmons

[IAEP] Need in Haiti: inexpensive portable projectors for OLPC/XO classrooms

2010-02-03 Thread Adam Holt
WavePlace and other Haiti Education efforts keep asking me the same
thing, in NYC and elsewhere--who can answer:
How can in-classroom (and out-of-classroom?!) cheap portable overhead
projectors be rigged to XOs -- by hook or by crook -- /and what
models/arrangements are best?/

Aside from this wonderful home-made prototype, that unfortunately
overheats, what's achievable?

http://blog.laptop.org/2008/11/16/hardware-hacking-first-pass-at-an-xo-projector/

Is the following (/control/display your XO-computer from a non-XO PC or
Mac or Linux box/) the most viable approach?

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Remote_display

Could hacking an on-board VGA port realistic for XO-1's (/to an external
VGA monitor or projector/) be made into something more than a gimmick --
with broad(er) classroom potential?

Even if presumably impossible with upcoming XO-1.5 laptops?

What software approaches preferred Sugar Activities make kids/teachers
project presentations shine? EG. check out Walter Bender's presentation

Please reply to the olpc-ha...@laptop.org mailing list, digging deeper
than the above mostly-2008 pages wherever we can expand PowerPoint
(and hopefully far superior) options for Haitian
classrooms/projects/teachers...THX

I have not seen the XO, but I think we should be rather thinking about these

another that is priced at $139 on Ebay.  These types of machines can be
configured for Administrative use and to do these other things.

Agreed. There's a new breed of extremely miniature projectors which
might be well-suited, for example:
  http://www.google.com/search?q=miniature+projector
  http://blog.laptopmag.com/mini-projector-face-off-3m-mpro110-vs-dell-m109s

These are priced at about 1.5x the cost of an XO, and combined with
the VGA output from a schoolserver, would probably make excellent
accessories for a classroom.

There's no real need to use the new ultra-mini projectors in most
classroom situations, something like
http://www.amazon.com/Torpedo-Entertainment-Game-Projector-BLACK/dp/B0033M5NXQ/
might work as well. Note that the primary expense for a projector is
likely to be replacement bulbs.

I also wonder if
http://www.amazon.com/Porta-Trace-Mini-Sketch-5x-Opaque-Projector/dp/B000A3E2T2
might work, if just placed on an XO screen. There might still be heat
issues, but it's cheap enough that an experiment might be warranted.

[IAEP] Sugar Digest 2009-02-03 (addendum)

2010-02-03 Thread Walter Bender
I forgot to mention a few things in yesterday's Digest:

(1) We need to put together our Google Summer of Code proposal...
please contact me if you are interested in helping.
(2) We have several SL proposals submitted to organizations that
require voting. Please visit
http://www.dmlcompetition.net/pligg/story.php?title=496 and
http://refresheverything.com/SugarLabsMassachusetts and cast your
vote.
(3) The Steven Parrish and team in Paraguay have made great progress
on porting Fedora 11 (and Sugar 0.84) to the OLPC XO-1. This will mean
that old OLPC hardware will be able to readily run recent versions of
Sugar.

regards.

That's a cute idea! Needs to be larger though - the XO's screen is 6.0x4.5
inches, and this one only sees 3.5x3.5. The middle one (5x5) is still to small,
the big one (7x7) would fit but is already close to the XO's price itself.
Worth a try though ...

you may have problems watching movies due to the usb-to-vga card = the

combined with an ipod you can watch movies at DVD quality

Sweet!

Can anybody confirm XO Laptops' 1200x900 resolution gets converted
cleanly to 640x480 when projected from Sugar?

For example, can the Binaries here at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Adding_USB_SVGA#Binaries help any teacher fire
up her/his class without much hassle?
(In this case, on OLPC Software Release 8.2.1 = Build 802 = Sugar 0.82)

Have you considered LED monitors? Monitors (= 23) are quite affordable these
days and good enough for a class of about 25-30 students. For large gatherings
(30+), you could spread multiple monitors around the room.

The monitors can be used with a long VGA cable and no separate projection
screen is needed. They are cheaper, better (picture quality), need less power
and their brighter displays means the room need not be darkened.

[IAEP] Haitian Creole for Education Community Dinner -- Saturday with OLPC/Sugar NYC

2010-02-03 Thread Adam Holt

HAITI FEAST ON EDUCATION INVITATION

Even if you cannot make it to Saturday's full-day NYC Crisis Camp events
(http://www.eventbrite.com/event/558710117) plz join our Haitian Creole
for Education Community Dinner right afterwards, co-hosted with the One
Laptop per Child/Sugar Labs NYC Volunteer Community, at superb Haitian
Restaurant /KOMBIT!/

   279 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn
   http://KombitRestaurant.com

   5:30PM Saturday, Feb 6

All welcome -- thanks for closing your laptop for an evening to talk
about what a Kreyol E-Learning really means for those Haitian children
who soon will be opening Theirs.

RSVP to holt @ laptop.org with your party size, so I can adjust the
growing reservation!

Most important, thanks all for investing your life's greatest skills
this year in creating a foundation for Haiti's Library of Alexandria for
Education, which we invite you to do starting here:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Haitian_Creole_Translation_for_Education

Later Carmina will preview a colorful web site to help facilitate
community-organizing of quality Kreyol works to this end, in whatever
form this Peoples Library takes.

But one Book at a Time: /we here are intentionally starting translation
with just 1 book, and a long horizon/. That is http://laptop.org/manual
created by deeply dedicated OLPC/Sugar volunteers, and very soon to be
translated to Kreyol for Haitian kids (aged 5 to 95) thanks to the
coordination of some Heroic people in NYC's Haitian community
especially. So these exact same 5-year olds might remember their little
community guide to a more creative-collaborative 21st century, if not
the elders who wrote it back in 2010 -- when these kids turn 95 too. No
matter how high the oceans in that year when that next (22nd) century
quickly arrives...
