Sorry for the late notice: we've been back in business since about 6pm
EST.

The new IP for sunjammer.sugarlabs.org is 208.118.235.53, the IPv6 is
2002:d076:eb35::1. All the zones under our control have already been
updated.

Thanks to the FSF sysadmins for the smooth transition (so far, at
least). There may be another, short outage within a few days to move the
dom0 to its final rack slot.

[IAEP] Introducing the IGDA Learning and Education SIG

2012-02-28 Thread STEPHEN JACOBS
Hi folks,

I'm happy to announce a new Special Interest Group of the International Game
Developers Association, which will focus on games designed for learning in
formal and informal contexts and on commercial entertainment titles used for
learning as well.

The IGDA began, and still primarily is, a professional organization for
commercial game developers. That said, over recent years it has been embracing
the less commercial side as well. Within the IDGA are a raft of game designers
who understand how to make games fun and engaging as well as educators
interested in getting involved with games as a learning tool. Most of the IGDA
SIGS, including ours, require registration, but not membership or fees to join.

I invite those of you in San Francisco to join us in the IGDA Booth at GDC on
Wednesday the 7th at 2:00 pm. While the conference is a paid conference, the
IGDA booth is usually in the lobby of one of the Moscone buildings and
therefore does not require a conference registration badge to access.

I invite all of you interested in games and learning to join our Google Group
at http://groups.google.com/group/igdaleg

Last but not least, PASS IT ON! :-)

Hope to see you in SF or on-line.

[IAEP] Mechatronics with XO + MSP430 microcontroller Lab manual Spanish

2012-02-28 Thread Yamaplos .
A while back I put together some instructions on how to get a vanilla
XO/Sugar to talk to a Texas Instruments MSP430 Launchad board
(including 2 microcontrollers, shipping included, only $4.30)
http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/OLPC_XO-1

I'm pushing the concept further with some "Lab" activities on the
subject, potentially hopefully (my track record not so good) a set of
10 Labs to start, (in Castillian)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CUHeUkDNtYurCu_KckwpJIcVdlumEIiZPOeRXtDV8nU/edit

The inspiration is to bridge between the zero level of practical
skills acquired in normal schooling and available stuff that already
presupposes some knowledge, eventually getting to the excellent docs
from Texas Instruments.

The XO is great, with microcontrollers it can only get better!

There are at least ten ideas posted by now (thanks go to Walter and a
few others). Most of the look quite interesting, but also rather
demanding. The description doesn't always reflect how hard it is, e.g.
"Background Image on Home View" fails to mention that the Home View
needs to be converted from hippo-canvas to plain GTK *first* (which I
don't see anyone else doing until April, when students are supposed to
start familiarising themselves with the project).

As much as I'd like to see those features in Sugar, they are out of
scope for GSoC, unless you manage to attract rather exceptional students
(best of the best, not just local best). Personally I'd prefer to have
students working on smaller projects and making sure their work actually
lands upstream. I can't check (as the wiki server is physically moving
right now), but AFAIR very few GSoC projects actually made it upstream
into Sugar.
