Re: [IAEP] [squeakland] finalizing Tidepool alpha list
Pato, Tidepool will be free to play, though at this time the source code is not open. This has more to do with personal bandwidth than philosophy. My announcements to these lists is motivated by shared educational philosophy (based upon the works of Papert Kay) and shared community (I've worked with many in the Etoys, OLPC, and Sugar world.) Money raised from Tidepool will primarily go to non-profit educational groups, including the upcoming Kickstarter which will be used to pay courseware authors. [IAEP] Tidepool news
Hi everyone, I’ve been making great progress on Tidepool, our programmable game world for kids, though haven’t talked much about it this summer. Yesterday I resumed my development log, with daily details and screenshots for those interested. The programming interface is really coming along. blog: http://playtidepool.com/news/ rss: http://playtidepool.com/news/feed/ We’ve also picked some solid release dates. For too long, I’ve treated Tidepool as a pet project with “when it’s done” aspirations. From here on, I’ll timebox each release as I would with a client. So, mark your calendar … beta release on December 1st … official “gold” release on March 20th. These dates will not change. We’re planning a release party on March 20th with an equinox bonfire in our backyard, so if you’re able to make it out for the weekend, we’ll make room for you. One way or another, my twenty-one months of work will be done, so come celebrate or commiserate. [IAEP] [ANN] make 4th grade courseware this summer
For years, I've endeavored to create a courseware library that showcases the deep-learning possibilities of tools such as Squeak Etoys and Scratch. We made progress using Etoys as the platform, but never quite finished. Now I’d like to try again with Tidepool http://playtidepool.com/. I’m hoping to find educators who can help us create 8 to 24 units this summer. We have a fund for stipends, which will be shared by the authors. All courseware will be Creative Commons. Tidepool itself is free. [IAEP] Tidepool, a place to play and learn
Hi everyone, Today, Waveplace is very excited to announce a new software project … Tidepool .. a place to play and learn. Taking the experience we’ve gained over the last five years teaching Sugar, Etoys, and Scratch in places like Haiti and Nicaragua, we’ve decided to create a brand-new learning system, one that furthers the cause of constructionist learning through a multi-touch interface, open API, and new programming paradigm. When will it be available? When it’s ready. We’re currently in the alpha stage with our core group of twelve collaborators. We’ll start an open beta sometime in 2013. To see our “big bullets”, visit http://waveplace.org/tidepool. Follow our blog at http://waveplace.org/news/blog. We’ve thought about what kind of software we’d create for years, now’s our chance to make it real. We hope you like it! [IAEP] Waveplace Video Blog
Hi everyone, Quite a lot has happened at Waveplace over the last year or two, though you might not know it, given how little we blog or post videos these days. In summary, we've brought laptops to 33 schools, most of them in Haiti. We've trained 165 adults to become mentors. We've created 16 weeks worth of courseware using Etoys and Sugar. All of that is prequel, though, to what we comes next. I often joke that Waveplace's mission is Nice laptop, now what? (training) Well, now it's become, Nice training, now what? The answer is ... Assessment, Courseware, Outreach, Reflection, Network ... aka, Project Acorn. As Project Acorn unfolds, I'll make video logs instead of written blogs, posting them in rough form to keep folks informed. You can follow along here: http://waveplace.org/news/ or here: http://youtube.com/waveplace or here: http://www.facebook.com/waveplace (please like us) or here: http://twitter.com//waveplace (please follow) I'll be posting a new video every weekday, always at noon, New York time. My hope is to use the videos as a vehicle for recording some of the experience we've accumulated in the last 4+ years, so that others may benefit. And no, I don't like seeing myself on video or hearing myself talk. Quite the contrary. But it's the simplest fastest way to do this. Re: [IAEP] Problem with Etoys Showcase
I'm able to access it. It's possible that it's intermittent. If you see the problem again, try again in a few minutes and see if it's there again. The server restarts itself automatically when there's a problem . . . if there's a persistent problem (likely due to memory settings that need tweaking) it may appear as if it's often down. Same goes for WebDAV, which was also working fine. FYI, sending to the Squeakland list should be sufficient. Rita and the rest can send a priority support notification (I got a text down in Haiti, FYI). [IAEP] !! in 10.1.3, setting languages property clears all activities
Hi folks, I'm done in Haiti, about to prep 120 laptops. Normally we use our handy-dandy prep script. I do a get on it, and yes, it's English/USA. Seems the right thing. So I: sugar-control-panel -s languages Kreyol/Haiti And after restarting, ALL OF THE ACTIVITIES ARE GONE. [IAEP] Waveplace back to Haiti in 2 weeks, 2 days
Hi everyone, Waveplace is headed back to Haiti to start 5 new XO pilots. Follow my daily blogging for the next month here: http://waveplace.org/news/ Subscribe to my twitter feed here: http://twitter.com/teefal/ Like us on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/waveplace Here's the first blog post: With flights just bought, we're off to Haiti once again. In two weeks, two days, we'll spend two weeks, two days, starting new pilots: two in Cite Soleil, two in tent camps, one with a youth choir, all of them exciting. As usual, there's a half dozen snags. We don't yet have the laptops out of customs, which makes me nervous as hell, though our chief partner said, It'll be fine, book your flights, so we did. Even if we get the laptops out of customs, we won't know how many of them work until just before the pilots. Even if all are working, we still won't have enough, which means we'll bring twenty ourselves. Our chief contact at JP/HRO resigned over the holiday break. We'll be talking with her replacement on Thursday, who seems equally enthusiastic, though major changes so close to a pilot start are always fun. Yesterday an impartial commission announced that Celestin (the unpopular candidate) was actually behind Martelly (the popular one). Preval and Celestin will react to the news after tomorrow's anniversary, which could spark a new round of rioting. We're also hoping the runoff election will be scheduled after our trip. Pretty much the only certain thing is that we're on a very, very tight budget. We can't rent a car, we can't travel to Léogâne, we can't do much more than walk back and forth to the school. Every dollar counts. But we're going. Our work paid off. How to pay the bills in March is another question. In February, we'll make a difference. -- Timothy Falconer Waveplace Foundation http://waveplace.org + 1 610 797 3100 x33 ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] stepping down from squeakland
Hi everyone, After much soul searching, I've decided to step down as director of Squeakland Foundation. Since the earthquake in Haiti, my time has largely been spent on our Waveplace education pilots there, which have been very successful and are growing fast. Last night I decided that I need to stay focused on Haiti and our other Waveplace work, that I no longer have time for the additional responsibilities of Squeakland. I leave you in the very capable hands of Rita Freudenberg and whomever the new board decides. I still love Etoys, and will continue to teach it and promote it, though this will now be through Waveplace, not Squeakland. What has been called the Squeakland Courseware will now become the Waveplace Courseware. Same stuff, different website. I will continue to fundraise for courseware development, this will be through Waveplace now. All materials will remain freely distributable. Immuexa, my software company, will continue to host and support the Squeakland website and showcase for free. Squeakland will now be our client, as Viewpoints was before. My very best to the many people I have meet in the last fifteen months. Thank you for your passion, your time, your talent. What a gift to work with such incredible people! [IAEP] Waveplace at the epicenter in Haiti
(from a recent Waveplace blog post by Beth Santos ... Joseph is one of our Haitian mentors) Yesterday I sat down with Joseph's brother, Abela, who works with Haiti Partners. We were sitting under his little tin roof lean-to, looking at the remains of his home- a beautiful two-story building that is now a couple of tiles and lots of space. He praised the [Waveplace] program and seemed so pleased that it was going well here in Leogane. I told him that there are a number of people in the USA that believe that laptops are not the answer right now, especially in areas like Leogane that are most affected by the earthquake. He and Joseph looked at me like I was crazy. “Are you kidding??” he asked. “Food, water, sure, we need that. But EDUCATION- that's what we really need right now! Without it, how will we be able to build our own?” Joseph added the fact that the kids in Leogane need something to focus on, more than anything. So many children have PTSD and they just need to look forward. They feel helpless and they need to make use of themselves, and take their minds off of what happened to them and their families. Abela sat for a moment. We told him how grateful we were for his hospitality and he fell silent. When he spoke, he told us about how, after the earthquake, everyone went to stay in camps but he couldn't do it. He would come home everyday, early in the morning, and sit outside his house and just be quiet. He says his post-traumatic stress is terrible. We think of the children who are still staying in tents, and we think about how our education program is helping their minds to not only escape, but to grow. These children finally feel that they are worth something. And in Leogane, the program is more valuable than anything. [IAEP] Waveplace Plans to Help Haiti
Hi everyone, After talking non-stop with dozens of people and groups over the last two weeks, Waveplace has settled on a plan to help Haiti in the coming four months. Tonight I've uploaded three videos describing this plan. Please forgive the roughness of my presentation (and my tired haggard look). This was simply the quickest way for me to put the details of the plan online for all to see. I will be transcribing the videos tomorrow for those that would rather read text. Here are the videos: 1. [IAEP] please help us prioritize work for the next Etoys release
Hi everyone, With Etoys 4 done (we're getting lots of downloads), it's time to start planning the next release, due mid-June. The first step is to get a sense for what the community wants most. Our current development task list has 180 tickets. I'd like to move at least 100 of those into someday status, which means we have to choose the top 80. Please scan the list and pick your top 10 issues that you'd like to see. You can either vote within JIRA or respond to this email with your picks. Here's the list: http://tracker.squeakland.org/dev Once we get the picks, we'll assign priorities to the top 80 and move the rest into someday status. Thanks, Tim -- Timothy Falconer Squeakland Foundation http://squeakland.org 610-797-3100 -- Intelligence is what you use when you don't know what to do. ... piaget ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] ANN: Etoys 4 has been released!
Squeakland is proud to announce the release of Etoys 4, which you can now download from our website. Special thanks to the Squeakland software team, particularly Bert Freudenberg, Yoshiki Ohshima, and Scott Wallace for their tremendous efforts in the last month. Your hard work really shows! http://squeakland.org/download/ In our Fall newsletter, you'll find some thoughts by Scott Wallace, along with the Etoys 4 release notes which detail the changes you'll find. Of special interest is the new Squeakland Showcase. Everyone can now share their projects directly from Etoys to our website, where the Etoys community can then benefit from the many surprising and useful Etoys examples that are available. Please explore the showcase and share your projects with us. We want to hear from you! http://squeakland.org/news/newsletter/web.jsp?id=112 Also, if you haven't signed our Squeakers list, consider adding your name. As I write this, more than 175 people from 35 countries have signed, which really shows the enthusiasm and reach of Etoys throughout the world. http://squeakland.org/squeakers/ Take care, Timothy -- Timothy Falconer Squeakland Foundation http://squeakland.org 610-797-3100 -- Intelligence is what you use when you don't know what to do. ... piaget ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] squeakland.org translation priorities
On Oct 13, 2009, at 10:07 AM, Timothy Falconer wrote: Hi everyone, We're translating most of the Squeakland (Etoys) website right now into Spanish and Portuguese, with French soon to come. You can help too . . . simply claim your language and reply to this message (to avoid duplication), then read the following: http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-480 http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-481 We're also writing some grants now, some of which are aimed at our translation efforts. Given this, I'm trying to determine a good translation priority list, which shows the order of languages we want to focus on most. Yes, we'll get translations first from people that volunteer, and that won't always correspond to the priority list. But our time (and future hopeful funds) are limited, so we'd like to concentrate on the languages that will reach the most new and existing Etoys users. To get the conversation started, here are the most popular languages in the world: 1. Chinese * 2. Spanish 3. English 4. Hindi * 5. Arabic * 6. Bengali * 7. Portuguese 8. Russian 9. Japanese 10. Korean 11. German 12. French (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_number_of_native_speakers , and several other sources) Perhaps more telling is this list, which shows the number of wikipedia articles, which may be a better indicator of computer and web use: 1. English 2. French 3. German 4. Spanish 5. Portuguese 6. Italian 7. Japanese 8. Russian 9. Dutch 10. Polish 11. Chinese 12. Swedish (from http://s23.org/wikistats/wikipedias_html.php?sort=total_desc) More direct to Etoys is our new list of Squeakers, which has a graph at the bottom that shows number of users by country: 1. United States (english/spanish) 2. Germany (german) 3. Uruguay (spanish) 4. Brazil (portuguese) 5. Canada (english/french) 6. Argentina (spanish) 7. Austria (german) 8. Spain (spanish) 9. Colombia (spanish) 10. Bolivia (spanish) 11. Japan (japanese) 12. Netherlands (dutch) (from http://squeakland.org/squeakers/ ... add your name and country!) Clearly, these languages merit special effort: 1. English 2. Spanish 3. German 4. Portuguese 5. French And these represent known areas of Etoys use: 6. Japanese 7. Korean 8. Haitian Kreyol 9. Nepali Three more to make a list of twelve: 10. Russian 11. Italian 12. Dutch Do you agree with this list of twelve? What would you add? Where would you put it in the list, and why? We of course want to have all languages represented someday, particularly the starred items in the first list. We're simply trying to set our immediate goals, given limited time and resources. Ah yes, forgot another criteria ... existing Etoys translations: 1. ENGLISH 2. Tamil 3. Sinhala 4. GERMAN 5. Pashto 6. Greek 7. Dari 8. SPANISH 9. Russian 10. Bengali 11. Mongolian 12. FRENCH 13. Turkish 14. Swedish 15. HAITIAN KREYOL 16. JAPANESE 17. Chinese 18. PORTUGUESE 19. Vietnamese 20. KOREAN 21. Urdu 22. ITALIAN 23. DUTCH 24. NEPALI 25. Slovak (from http://translate.sugarlabs.org/projects/etoys/) The capitalized ones are in my list of twelve. -- Timothy Falconer Squeakland Foundation http://squeakland.org 610-797-3100 -- Intelligence is what you use when you don't know what to do. ... piaget ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] ANN: Squeakfest call for presentations
Greetings! The official Squeakfest website is now live and ready for you to propose a presentation, workshop, or panel. http://squeakfest.org The dates for Squeakfest USA in Los Angeles CA are August 10, 11, 12. The dates for Squeakfest Brasil in Porto Alegre RS are July 23, 24, 25. Also keep in mind that many of us will be attending nearby WCCE the following week (July 27 to 31). The theme for this year's USA conference will be Etoys in the classroom. Our overall goal is to show how teachers are using Etoys to teach their full curriculum. Whether language arts, math, science, or more, we hope to showcase the many ways Etoys can help teachers demonstrate abstract ideas easily. If you've got experience teaching with Etoys, we'd love to hear about it, as would the attendees of the conference, many of whom will be elementary teachers. We're also very interested in non-classroom Etoys use, particularly as it relates to OLPC pilots or homeschooling. We'll be adding more information to the website as it becomes available, but for now, the important thing is to get your presentation information to us so we can begin to design the program for our three days together. Please complete and submit the online form no later than June 1st, 2009. Please share this information with anyone you think would be interested in either Squeakfest conference. We hope to see you there! Take care, Tim -- Timothy Falconer Squeakland Foundation http://squeakland.org 610-797-3100 ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!)
