Re: Wouldn't it be WIKI and SourceForge time?

2005-08-12 Thread Farley, Peter x23353
Peter,

We share more than a first name. I agree with your point that "new blood"
thinking needs to happen for this environment to survive.

I also agree that cooperative development of freeware tools would be "A Good
Thing(TM)". However, where is the freeware interface to the build process
on the mainframe? Whose mainframe can the build be performed on? Can it be
customized by user to build on their own private mainframe? Eclipse (which
I gather in its non-IBM-enhanced form is open source and free) may interface
to z/OS Unix Services without charge, but can it submit a batch compile and
return all of the results to the workstation and/or to an off-z/OS
repository? Can build versions that were built on different
versions/releases of the mainframe OS be tracked and stored separately?
There are a lot of questions like that which need answers before any
adoption can or will happen.

Just having a cooperative writing and modification and documentation and
bug-tracking environment doesn't help if you cannot build and install.

Some of the interfaces that have been suggested are large-$ software on the
z/OS side. I have seen quotes of USD$5K per seat for WSED or it's
successor. Many shops, large and small, just can not justify that kind of
cost. Until there are low or no-cost options, non-"legacy" development of
"legacy" code can not happen cooperatively.

The BUILD options are crucial to adoption. Until/unless they exist, the
rest is just spinning your proverbial wheels. It is probably more than
double the work, because if you adopt the development environment, you then
have to manually transport it to z/OS (or z/VM) for build, and manually
transport the results back. That is just not cost-effective or
productivity-enhancing.

Maybe the first cooperative development should be a consistent build
capability, followed immediately by highly customizable independent
change-control interfaces that do not depend on high-cost software on the
mainframe.

WRT WIKI, I can see it might be an alternative way to store and organize
discussions and knowledge sets. I will withhold judgment until I know more.

Lastly, I agree with you that more community is better. How to get there is
the hard part. Some dinos will need to be dragged there kicking and
screaming, and staked down with ropes and chains to boot. Some of us may
just wander over for a look-see, WHEN the right tools are available.

Regards,

Peter

Me too, Edward but

This means the end of the Sysplex Timers but does not mean the removal of
the restriction in the distance between the CPC's, although now it will be
increased to 100 KM.

What are the shops doing know when this limit is reached?. Are they
trapped in this restriction?.

How we can keep a Parallel Sysplex separated by distances greater to 100
KM (to use the new limit) without implementing GDPS?. AFAIK, GDPS
automates the take over but you still will experiment outages.

Does anybody know why this new limit?. It it something internal to System
Z9?

TIA

That's a no-brainer; the companies interested in an open source

Now, if you want people contributing code independently of their
employers, then you'll have to wait for IBM to offer hobbyist licenses
for z/OS and z/VM; that's not something that we can do anything about.
If that's your concern, then you'll need to make a business case to

If the only action required was to install a fix for OW57275, then the

Before you proceed, list your target zone and check the FMID levels of

You can use any static system symbol in your TSO proc, including

If you actually want to allocate a data set during initial command

2005-08-12 Thread Farley, Peter x23353
Pardon my ignorance, but is "Display Editing System for CMS" the "official"
title for EDGAR? If so, IUP is a good status. IIRC, IUP's were not
copyrighted or licensed, though they were sometimes chargable. Or at least,
that was true for some IUP's.

ISTR the software hierarchy used to be IUP, FDP (Field Developed Program),
PO (Program Offering) and PP (Program Product). All but PP were
source-included software.

Would you be sure to hold on to that reference card (and any other doc you
may have on it)? Or if you're willing to part with it, please write to me
offline.

Many thanks.

Does anyone have an archive of DBC???? (XDC's predecessor)

2005-08-12 Thread David Cole

Hi,

Recently, I've agreed to make DBC available, without charge, to the
Hercules MVS/SP project. "DBC" is the predecessor program XDC, and it
will run only on MVS/SP and older systems. (It won't run on MVS/XA or
anything newer.)

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find my primary archive tape for DBC.

I have been able to find load modules for DBC release v6.0; however,
that release was written just prior to our development of the Cross
Domain Facility ("CDF"), our batch debugging support.

CDF was first introduced with DBC release v6.1, and that's the level
of DBC that I'd really like to give to the Hercules people, IF I can find it...

So does anyone out there have an old archived copy of a distribution
of DBC v6.1? If so, would you be willing to send me a copy?

2005-08-12 Thread Jon Brock
I am enjoying this thread; it is nice to see I'm not the only one who
doesn't know how all the PQs, UQs, FMIDs, etc. fit together. I like SMPE, but
I don't know of any single place where all the whys and wherefores of this
stuff are explained. Maybe it exists, but I haven't seen it. (That said, I do
remember a post a good while back where someone on the list tried to make it
all comprehensible, but I can't find it in the archives.)

Jon

The problems I'm having here is that the person who installed z/OS 1.4 NEVER
picked up ANY service.

There is now a whole bunch of trouble trying to install a new FMID into the
system because all this service is missing.

Thanks for everyones continuing help.

Sorry, my point wasn't clear. What I meant was that the target audience
for MVS materials is the MVS platform. Changing the web distribution site
does not make these materials any more or less available/interesting to
non-MVS types.

PTFs applied, solves problem, thanks

2005-08-12 Thread Steve Comstock

Well, it took a lot of work and a lot of help from
a lot of people, but I finally got the LE / PL/I / HFS
problem fixed.

How you guys do this SMP/E stuff day in and day out
is amazing to me. Of course, maybe because you do it
day in and day out it is more natural. But I found
it a horror to work with. No application programmers
have any idea of what goes on behind the scenes to
let them develop their applications.

So thanks again to everyone on this list (and off)
who helped me get the job done. Now I can get back
to my work.

Kind regards,

For VM/370 R6 under Hercules, where we have no XEDIT nor any other
fullscreen editor available. However, I have been informed privately that
EDGAR also required DIAG 58, which is also not present in VM/370 R6.
<*Sigh*>

Are you sure it was a Program Product? I was also told that it was an FDP,
not a PP.

Rather than using SDSF, you could use REXX on TSO to do this. Here's a
REXX that I use (in the foreground) that could be easily modified to do
what you want to do in the background:

/* REXX */
/**/
/* Issue an MVS system command and display the response */
/**/
parse arg commands
address 'TSO'
   'CONSPROF SOLDISP(NO) UNSOLDISP(NO)'
   'CONSOLE ACTIVATE'
line.0 = 0
do while commands ^= ''
   parse var commands command'\'commands
   address 'CONSOLE'
  command
   if line.0 > 0 then do
  line.0 = line.0 + 1
  interpret 'line.'line.0'= '' '''
   end
   line.0 = line.0 + 1
   interpret 'line.'line.0' = command'
   do until msg_rc ^= 0
  msg_rc=getmsg('msg.'3)
  if msg_rc = 0 then
  do i = 1 to msg.0
 line.0 = line.0 + 1
 interpret 'line.'line.0' = msg.i'
  end
   end
end
address 'TSO'
   'ALLOC FI(CMDRESP) NEW REUSE CYL SPACE(1,1) LRECL(132) UNIT(SYSDA) ',
   'BLKSIZE(13200) RECFM(F,B)'
do i = 1 to line.0
   queue line.i
end
   'EXECIO' line.0 'DISKW CMDRESP (FINI'
tf = time(s)
address 'ISPEXEC'
   'LMINIT DATAID(DID) DDNAME(CMDRESP)'
   'BROWSE DATAID('did') PANEL(SYSPANEL)'
   'LMFREE DATAID('did')'
address 'TSO'
   'CONSOLE DEACTIVATE'
exit

Obviously, you'd want to remove the ISPF stuff that displays the output
under ISPF BROWSE and you'd want to change the allocation to ensure that
the dataset survived the completion of the REXX/batch job.

(Neither I nor my employer make any warranties about this program and I'm
not particularly interested in any suggestions or improvements, it does
what I need it to do. :-)

With some work in PROFILE XEDIT, Xedit can be made to look much like

The common approach I've seen is to have the proc specify an "init" CLIST and
do the allocation in the CLIST. If you manipulations don't affect the SYSPROC

Re: Acquiring TSO Userid in Logon Proc

2005-08-12 Thread Scott Barry
Does the USERID need only appear somewhere in the DSN? If so, how about
adding a "dummy" DD allocation in the TSO LOGON PROC (or in the TSO LOGON
CLIST/EXEC) with a DSN=&&BLAHBLAH (temporary DSN - NEW,DELETE default) which
will yield a dataset creation of:

SYSyyddd.Thhmmss.RA000.userid.BLAHBLAH.H03

Here's the DD I used:

//DD0  DD   UNIT=SYSDA,SPACE=(TRK,0),DSN=&&BLAHBLAH

So, the USERID is in the 4th DSNODE - always guaranteed.

Sincerely,

Depends on what you mean by "during logon". If the PSCB has already been
created, you can get it from there.

PSATOLD -> TCBJSCB -> JSCBPSCB (User ID in PSCBUSER at offset zero.)

I need Coupling Facility Structure information.

2005-08-12 Thread Jay Paulson
I have a need to gather information about coupling facility structures
into a dataset via a batch process.

Essentially I need the information similar to the output from the "D
XCF,STR,STRNAME=ALL" command.

I had used the following job as a quick and dirty way of capturing the
output from commands in the past.
The job will work for short running commands such /D CF
However, I am never able to get the output from /D XCF,STR,STRNAME=ALL
I see the command but never the response. I suspect that it is timing
out or something.

//STEP1EXEC PGM=IKJEFT01
//SYSTSPRT DD SYSOUT=*
//ISFOUT   DD SYSOUT=*
//PRINTDD  DD DSN=.x.x,
//   DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE),
//   UNIT=DISK,DCB=(LRECL=133,BLKSIZE=0,RECFM=FB),
//   SPACE=(CYL,(20,4),RLSE)
//ISFINDD *
 ULOG
 /D XCF,STR,STRNAME=ALL

 /D CF
 PT FILE PRINTDD
 PRINT
 PRINT CLOSE
//SYSTSIN  DD *
 EXECUTIL SEARCHDD(YES)
 SDSF
/*

Does anyone know a way that I could get this information via a batch
job?

Re: Acquiring TSO Userid in Logon Proc

2005-08-12 Thread Earnie Allen
RE: your suggetion

You can specify something like:

//$TSOSM  EXEC PGM=ADFMDF03,DYNAMNBR=200  (or PGM=IKJEFT01)
//ISPPROF   DD DISP=SHR,DSN=&SYSUID..&SYSNAME..ISPF.ISPPROF
  . . .

You can insert the basic system variables. The above example inserts the
TSO userid via &SYSUID, and your system ID (from IEASYSxx) via &SYSNAME.

===

Well, unfortunately (it seems) that does not work in a "proc" that is
primarily responsible for dataset/library allocation/concatenation --- and
contains no executable steps. We utilize a logon exec that interfaces with
the logon proc for creating the "custom" TSO environment for the users of
that particular TSO proc(edure) --- (which in this case winds up being the
TSO session job-step).

Clear as mud, I am sure!!

Simple: developers for a non-IBM platform don't have access to or
familiarity with IBM tools. That provides an argument in favor of,
e.g., sourceforge, but it is an argument that does not apply when the
software is not cross-platform.

Very close, but yes. When the routine hit asid 00E0, they compared
favorably. In diagnosing this, it wasn't until I added the datatype()

came out as NUM did I figure it out. Duh.

I had long figured out that I could use strictly equals, but I wanted to get
to the root cause.

What do you win...Had you been siting over my shoulder and found the
problem 1 hour prior to me sending my post to this list, you would have won
a new car.Alas, as it is now, well you win squat. Both you and
Mark Wheeler do get recognition from your peers that you are both REXX
savvy and not to be reckoned with. How's that?

Thanks, Todd.

I agree. A mailing list is an excellent way to carry on a
pseudo-real-time discussion, but is an appaling way to document the
output from those discussions. A Wiki would be an excellent medium for
hardening the knowledge that bounces around in here, though it wouln't
surprise me if some of the fossils disagree because they can't find it

I'm a huge fan of Open Source, and I'm rather disappointed that it
hasn't gained a bigger foothold in our playground. I'd sincerely love to
see some Open Source solutions to some of the somewhat less mission
critical, what I consider to be overly expensive products, such as
Omegamon/view, Escon Manager, SAS. (I don't intend to pick on any
particular vendor - they are just 3 that spring to mind.) I don't
believe many companies would be prepared to place their trust in open
source databases or transaction managers, but in the areas of
monitoring, reporting and hardware management, some serious, high
quality projects might be in a position to save a large amount of cash,
and make the platform as a whole even more affordable.

Of course, there is the issue of WHERE to develop (legally) is an
impediment.

True again, but here is where we all can contribute. Not through a Wiki,
not through CBT, but by providing education and showing enthousiasm about
what we do. My experience shows that once you educate people and show them
what a mainframe really is, they too become enthousiastic about it. Of
course they have to be willing (at least a little bit), but then my
entousiasm does rub off on those that have an open mind.
