BTDT.

When you switch from Monoplex to Multiplex, you need to add the system names
and/or the sysplex name to the CDS and activate the changes BEFORE you bring
the second and succeeding systems up.

If you do not do this, the only way to get the new systems recognize is to
allocate a new COMMDS, then switch to it. And you still have to add the
system names in first.

Matthew,
I just did it. I added system names and allocated new COMMDS.
However new COMMDS resides on another, empty volume - so I thought, the
problem was with serialization (RESERVE).

I have to try to move the COMMDS back to original volume.

To ohter gentlemen, who responded me: Yes, all my disk devices are
SHARED in HCD.

Thank you.

thread.

It is not the only option available. For HSM data it is possible to use
DUPLEX and concurrent write to two tapes in two drives in two libraries
in two locations.

Re: DASD genned as shared

2005-10-15 Thread R.S.

I'd like to mention a DASD feature: CACHE.
Frequently accessed data (i.e. VCR in VVDS) probably resides in cache,
so performance penalty is not so big.

The DFSMS: Managing Catalogs manual says:

The Effect of Sharing Catalogs on Cache Usage If a catalog is defined with
share options (3 4), and if it resides on a shared device, catalog
management considers the catalog a shared catalog. A catalog is considered a
shared catalog if it meets both of these conditions, even if it is not
actually being shared among systems. Before each physical access to a shared
catalog, special checking is performed to ensure that the ISC or CDSC
contains current information. Checking also ensures that the access method
control blocks for the catalog are updated in the event the catalog has been
extended, or otherwise altered from another system. This checking maintains
data integrity. It also affects performance because the VVR for a shared
catalog must be read before using the ISC or CDSC version of the BCS record.

Recommendation: To avoid catalog corruption, define a catalog volume on a
shared UCB and set catalog share options to (3 4) on all systems sharing a
catalog.

if we get rid of the 3480 drives and try to order new software? I know
there are internet options for z/OS but we are not positioned right now
to make use of it.

As other responded, nobody uses 3592 format for software delivery.

However I don't understand your mgmt: you *already have* 3480 drives.
What is the cost to keep it ? Floor space ? Power consumption ?

Maintenance ?
I would leave it and drop any maintenance contracts. Assuming you have
more than one drive, it is no big problem to repair it in case of
failure. It's not mission critical equipment.

CBT in FDR DFDSS format

2005-10-15 Thread Knutson, Sam
(Cross posted to IBM-MAIN and cbt-tape)

Hi,

At my SHARE talk in Boston I mentioned one of the CBT future
deliverables would be CBT materials in FDR DFSMSdss dumped format.

This is now available

http://www.cbttape.org/dumpedformatlibrary.htm

HTTP download is available now. Instructions for direct FTP download
intended only for those downloading directly to z/OS will be available
later this weekend.

This is the first time the material is available in this format so
feedback and suggestions would be especially useful.

Don't forget that (if memory serves me correctly) IBM applied for a
patent for queing people in lines.

So its not all technical items that IBM is getting patents for.

About a year ago this was discussed on here.

If memory serves me, they (IBM) try and patent a lot of stuff that
really has not real technical value. Sounds like a numbers game to me.

Eliminating HSC with CA-1?

2005-10-15 Thread Thomas Conley

One of my current clients is telling me that they were told by CA that the
new releases of CA-1 allow you to run an STK robotic library without HSC. I
can't seem to find any hard doc on this. Does anybody know if this can be
done and how?

I'm not aware of this. But then I don't really get involved with the

Seems to me that interfacing with the hardware that way is not what CA-1
would do. But, you never know.
