Re: Mark Thomen
So sad to lose someone so gifted and still comparatively young. Through IBM-MAIN, I felt that Mark was a 'friend' - same as Bruce. I never met them, but their contribution was always invaluable and appreciated by everyone. Real gentle men. My condolences to Mark's family. A very sad loss. As Rick said, a moment's silence is in order. He had been living in an Assisted Living acility. A week ago he was having a tough time swallowing and then inally respiratory distress. Many months before this he was unable to alk (nor write) and didn't even recognize what to do with a computer. I hink he was only 60 yrs. old. The prognosis for Pick's is 2-10 years and e made it three years from diagnosis. His mother died of the same isease. As Pat Choi said, he's better off where he is now and not uffering. Re: Migrate From Mainframe? To What?
Personally, I have to question if Anton Britz is a 'real' person or his motives. His comments about anything mainframe related are so outrageous, and are getting tedious to say the least. He lists himself on Linkedin as part of AB Consultants (there's a hint there!) in Idaho. But he doesn't seem to live there, according to public records. However, he appears at a number of addresses in California. Finally, Merv has made so many more appropriate comments than Mr Britz. Please, get real Mr. Britz, or find some other occupation. PS, sorry Darren, this guy has been allowed to inflict his venom on mainframes for so long that his latest comments have really got to me. Time for a beer perchance. -Original Message- From: Ken Porowski ken.porow...@cit.com To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Sent: Wed, Jun 30, 2010 6:21 pm Subject: Re: Migrate From Mainframe? To What? Re: 25 reasons why hardware is still hot at IBM
I have to agree with Timothy, good analysis. In addition, I recall about 25 years back that 'informed pundits' claimed that about 80% of the world's data was held on IBM Mainframes. Today they claim that figure is about 70%. So, the 'informed pundits' now say that the mainframe is losing out. But hang on a minute. How much 'data' was held on computers in 1985? Could I do online banking then? Could I make any hotel/airline/car rental reservation online then? On a more personal level, could I buy my wife some roses on her birthday online as I will be away on that day? I suspect that the amount of data held on Mainframes today is of several thousand magnitude of what it was in 1985. The general consensus is that the number of Mainframes has reduced, but as many have mentioned here, they have grown in power. I doubt if IBM know exactly how many Mainframes are left - just as an example, there were thousands of VSE sites with ESL licenses which are technically still valid, but many are no longer used. The reality is that there are still many sites left. I addressed a conference of IBM 'users' in 1985 with an opening slide which read, The Mainframe is Dead, Long Live The Mainframe (used by others too!). I suspect that this will be the same today as it will in the future, despite 'consultants' and ill-informed journalists telling us this is not so. One more personal note - I have created this comment twice, due to Sir Bill Gates' system crashing on my laptop. Say no more...
