Re: Batch JCL on Windows/.NET ???

2006-05-02 Thread Bruce Orcutt
If it's the one I'm thinking of, it did exist. I remember seeing it in 1988?
or was it 1989? on a VM/CMS system that was connected to BITNET.

It was a REXX that, when ran, print out an text graphic to the users screen,
while mailing itself to everyone in your namesfile.

I have been curious about this so called Christmas Tree Virus for many
years. I hear it mentioned, but have never been able to verify it as a
real event or urban legend.

Now you can get JCL errors AND viruses right on the same machine.

You always could - ex: the Christmas Tree Virus which was probably
more
of a worm on VM/Profs which I'm sure affected some machines with MVS
guests (and it's old enough that it was called MVS then I believe,
possibly MVS/XA or /ESA but still MVS).

It's just a lot harder to do, and a LOT harder to infect the operating
system itself. Applications, however, are probably easier.

Can someone please tell me what BMC product this belongs to? It shows
up
in a dump as being loaded into ECSA many, many times, possibly
contributing
to an LX shortage. Nobody wants to claim it...

I'm no expert, but are you sure the put command allows the (REPLACE at the
end of the command line?

Hi, All,

At the risk of wearing out my welcome here (assuming I haven't already),
I've abandoned the idea of using a protected ID for FTP and am now using a
NETRC dataset.

Everything works as expected, until this:

EZA1460I Command:

EZA1736I put 'HLQ.SRCHFOR.TERSE' 'HLQ.SRCHFOR.TERSE.PRD2' (REPLACE
EZA1542I Usage: PUT localfile foreignname

EZA1735I Std Return Code = 27000, Error Code = 7

WTF

How is there a usage issue with the put command

I expected an authorization error (code 17) on the target system, because I
have not yet authorized the FTP userID to the dataset profile protecting
HLQ.* on the target system.

How the [EMAIL PROTECTED] is this a usage error instead

MVS (z/OS) Beginner resources

2005-07-08 Thread Bruce Orcutt
I'm new to the MVS world. I mostly have a background in UNIX (many varieties),
OS/2, Windows, and some VM/CMS.

What I'm looking for is any recommendations people have on where someone might
get started learning the basics of MVS(z/OS). A book or website or two would
be best, but an official, paid class will probably be out of budget for me.
The role I'll be playing is that of a REXX programmer (I know REXX from my OS/2
and VM/CMS days.) helping to automate a number of the job flows on our
mainframe.

So, any books/sites people can recommend?

Thank you in advance,

Note how this says you are connecting to port 10, FTP service is usually on
