I have two SDLT tape drives with no autoloaders. I also have almost
unattended operations. The lone operator is planning on retiring in June. I
need to insert the intended HSM dump tape in the drive, many hours before the
dump is actually performed. Now I can do this with JCL and DFDSS and stack
all of my dumps on a single dump volume. But I have not been able to get HSM
to do this because it always asks for a PRIVAT tape for output - which causes
the tape in the drive to be kicked out and HSM to then wait for several more
hours for the arrival of someone to feed the SDLT tape in.
I have tried ADDVOL 22 UNIT(SDLT) DUMP(DUMPCLASS(TEST01)) and
MOUNT /3908,VOL=(SL,22),USE=PRIVATE; but HSM will not use that
mounted tape and asks for another SDLT drive for a PRIVAT tape.
The DFDSS dumps work because the appropriate volser is mounted privat every
day in a batch job during working hours, and in the very early morning another
batch job asks for that same volser. This works fine; but I would very much
prefer to have HSM controlling and knowing where the dumps are.
