Re: Any way to monitor Member Updates in a PDS
eventACTION does much more than monitoring at the member level. We using it to audit sysprogs activity by userid, all PARMLIB changes, USS changes, and specific dataset access to suspected obsolete datasets. In a large shop, you might have to split the database. 11 LPARs in our case hammer the drive, but some of the tracked application library datasets have thousands of updates per day. It also has a job scheduler. Your results may vary... Yes, much of this information can be done via SMF analysis. Do you want home-grown or COTS? Budget? Audit requirements? Re: Reading IBM Manuals on the Kindle DX (eBook)
I bit the bullet and bought an Apple iPad, and bought a $1 PDF reader. Reads IBM manuals just fine, including PDF bookmarks (called OutLine in the particular reader I installed. I didn't get the Kindle DX for exactly your reasons. Pros: - readable size, and you can zoom the full page display to get rid of the blank margins and still have a full page displayed, or zoom a lot and get one paragraph or diagram. - personal preference: I like the touch screen for paging and zooming - storage capacity of more manuals than I'll probably download - in the several thousand range - easier to carry than a laptop Cons: - spendy little sucker - I can print a lot of manuals for the same cost. - tied to the iTunes interface - somewhat clunky IMHO - not upgradable - get the size right the first time. I have the 32GB, probably could have gotten away with the 16 GB for z/OS library only. - eyes get tired after a couple of continuous viewing hours - 10 hour battery life - not so viewable in the sun - at the edge of being too heavy for long term viewing; I wish it was lighter, but the weight is not offensive. If you want further information, I'd be delighted to talk with you directly. One reason being that I wanted to read IBM manuals while travelling. The Kindle displays the PDFs nicely but lacks the possibility to jump from the TOC or links. For that reason and because other ebook formats, such as MOBI, have other advantages, I'm looking for a way to transform IBM manuals into the MOBI format. So far my experiments in transforming from PDF to MOBI did not show satisfactory results. I'm hoping that HTML for MOBI would yield in better results. Does anyone know if IBM manuals are available in HTML format? I'm not thinking about the format show by the Library Server which is split into too many small pages. I'm think about the manual as one large HTML file or possibly one HTML file per chapter. Any other suggestions are welcome as well. -- Peter Hunkeler CREDIT SUISSE AG -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@bama.ua.edu with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

Re: ftping a gdg from the z box
I often placed (+1) GDGs on Win servers for PDFs, accounting data, bank deposit/transfer, payroll deduction, etc. Yes, the FTP step could have been a separate job using a (0) generation, but not mandatory. I used the correct combination of DISPs and sometimes IFs in the JCL to keep the GDG if the FTP step failed. An FTP failure was normally not enough to stop the rest of the production jobstream from releasing. It was sometimes hit and miss if the Win server was available, especially across the country. Re: IBM 9393 RVAs "Obsolete" for Sure
When I worked for a state government, we swapped out a 165 of-some-kind for a 168 MP. The credit for the returned hardware went into a state-wide general funds account, and we immediately were "over budget". Re: Opinion time: SMF data in XML format?
John, If you have any business intelligence products onsite, you might want to talk to those folks. I FTPd SMF data and built a Cognos cube, while defining record types as I needed them. Fairly straightforward process. And yes, record maintenance was my responsibility. I can't remember if XML format was an option, as your requirement specifies. Another BI product might, though. David -Original Message- From: McKown, John To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Sent: Thu, Nov 12, 2009 4:07 pm Subject: Opinion time: SMF data in XML format? OK, probably nobody else is interested in this sort of thing. But I would like to process the SMF data off of the z/OS system. Most likely on a Linux system. And most likely in JAVA. Already proves that I'm brain damaged. But one thing that I like is that the RACF SMF data can be converted from "binary" format to XML using an exit in IFASMFDP. It would be helpful to me if the parties responsible for the generation of a particular SMF record would also supply a program which could do the same. Now, why don't I do it? I probably could. But then maintenance would be my responsibility. And so I'd need to monitor every PTF for any change to the SMF records that I am interested in. IOW: I'm a lazy SOB. Does anybody else thing this might be useful? Or do most of you not care because you use MXG and SAS? We no longer have SAS on the mainframe, but we do have it on a Windows box that I am supposed to have access to. I'll talk to the person here who has been doing the MXG work on it to learn how to use it. But I want to take the data home, in XML, because I have a screaming PC there (i7-920) which is not as frustrating to use as the lower powered desktops here. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@bama.ua.edu with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
