Re: z/OS system programmer staffing

2008-02-12 Thread Frank Alequin
Here is my opinion on Z/OS system programer staffing.

When I decided to start looking for a new JOB in the mainframe world, I found
that many companies were looking for System Programmer Gods that knew
about everything. This surprised me because I had enough work only working
with implementation of OPC Scheduler, now known as TWS and other products
installations.

After that I started getting also the responsibility of OS390 - Z/OS
installations, SMS, DFHSM implementation and Disaster Recovery Planing and
execution.

Right know I am one of the youngest System Programmer in my actual job. I
decided to stay in the mainframe world even thou people said that mainframe
was dying, but it has been difficult for me to find an attractive job in the
US.
Everything is contracts and that is not paying as much as it used to. The
people that have been in this field a long time know what I am talking about.
Besides when people see in my resume that I am currently living and working
in Puerto Rico don't pay that much attention.

A lot of people that gratuated with me are just foucused and oriented to open
systems.

Now I am just wondering if I should have decided to work in Open Systems.

Anyway I could keep on writing but I'll start bouring people.

RMM VRS and VTS - Location Question.

2006-05-01 Thread Frank Alequin
Hello to everyone,

In our site we are starting to direct all creation of our Physical tapes
to Virtual Tapes. In this migration we are also going to direct the DR
tapes to the VTS and then use OPENTECH product to copy them to phisical
tape(3592 Media). We found that some datasets created in virtual have
fallen to a VRS with a different location and expecting to be ejected.

My question would be regarding LOCATION.

Is there a way to define another location without expecting movement of a
virtual tape? I know that there is an Export/Import process but we are not
leaning towards that approach. We want to be able to create for example a
LOCATION(BRCOUT) and then using the OPENTECH product TAPECOPY/VDR copy all
volumes with LOCATION name BRCOUT. The only problem is that we don't know
if there is a way to create a LOCATION Similar to HOME. No movement
required it is only to mark them as BRCOUT.

I am opened to any suggestions or comments. HELP!!!

HSM using 3592.

2005-07-13 Thread Frank Alequin
Hello Everyone,

We are about to implement the use of 3592 with HSM but we do not know how
HSM is going to handle them exactly.

We are going to use them for the full volume dump process and will be
specifying STACK(99). That is were my question comes up, is this option
going to stack only 99 dumps or is it going to use the maximum space in
the device.

In other words does STACK(99) mean stack up to 99 or nolimit(maximum).

We dump aprox. 475 volume per week.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Re: Apply change of Management Class to Migrated Data Sets

2005-06-21 Thread Frank Alequin
Hello Lucy,

I was just wondering if changes to a management class apply to already
migrated datasets. I know that I could chage the management class but what
happens if that dataset is already migrated and you apply any king of
changes to that management class?

Take care

Frank

Re: Apply change of Management Class to Migrated Data Sets

2005-06-21 Thread Frank Alequin
Hello Bob,

Thank you very much, This question came up because we had some Datasets
in our site that were being migrated for eternity (NOLIMIT) and verify
some of these datasets we decided to change it so they would stay for a
month.

I made the change and nothing happened during PSM or SSM. I thought that
something would have happened because we had data sets more than three
years old. I peformed a listcat on one of the datasets and found out that
these datasets had and expiration date assigned by DB2. I kept on looking
for an explination and found out that if I don't have the parameter
EXPIREDATASETS(SCRATCH) that hsm will not expire these datasets and less
delete then.

Apply change of Management Class to Migrated Data Sets

2005-06-20 Thread Frank Alequin
Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding changes made to a management class.
After performing a change to a Management Class and activating it, does
this change apply to the migrated Data Sets? I mean if I change the option
Expire after non-usage from NOLIMIT to 60 Days, does it apply
automatically to existing migrated datasets?

Any observation and comment is welcome.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Delete automatically after 30 days migrated data set (ML2)

2005-06-08 Thread Frank Alequin
Hello,

I was trying to create a Management Class to Migrate a dataset after 1
day, keep it for 31 days and after that expire it. In this case we migrate
those datasets directly to ML2.

How am I supose to define the management class to perform such an action.

I have the following define;

Expiration Attributes

  Expire after Days Non-usage . : 31
  Expire after Date/Days . . . . : NOLIMIT
  Retention Limit . . . . . . . : NOLIMIT

With this definition I have notice that none of the data sets have been
deleted after 31 days.

Thank you and have a nice day.
