Re: HSM and CA-Disk
DFHSM works with DFSMS but it is not the same thing nor packaged with it. It is a separately-orderable product (actually called DFSMShsm). It is the same way with what used to be called DFDSS (now DFSMSdss) and RMM tape management. Actually, z/OS includes all the DFSMS components, including DSS, HSM, RMM, but there is a licensing member somewhere in PARMLIB that must be updated to enable them, after you pay your fees. They are not free exactly because of competition, like FDR and CA-1. Back when IBM first packaged all those components under DFSMS (15 years ago??), they were going to make them non-optional, so they would be free or at least bundled into the basic operating system price, but complaints from ISVs stopped that idea. -- Bruce A. To clarify: DFSMSdfp is free (included in z/OS price) DFSMSdss is extra paid DFSMShsm is extra paid DFSMSrmm is extra paid DFSMStvs is extra paid Note HSM requires DSS as a prerequisite. I fyou already use DSS, then your fee for HSM will be less. Also note that none of the products require real installation, the only thing to do is to pay the fee and put ENABLED in IFAPRDxx. It is also possible to enable it and not pay, but it is piracy. BTW: AFAIK the reason why some product are not included in base fee is existing competition. It is *not like* M$ did with Internet Explorer. You pay for RACF, because you can choose ACF2, you pay for HSM, because you can prefer CA-DISK, DFSORT is extra paid, because there is Syncsort, etc. In fact I don't remain any optional (paid) feature not having competition replacement -- Radoslaw Skorupka Lodz, Poland -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

Re: HSM and CA-Disk
CA:DISK is slower than HSM when it comes to full pack copies. I LOVE CA:DISK - it is what we use in our shop, but it is not the fastest product in the world. :) Lucy Walter Marguccio To: Sent by: IBM IBM-MAIN@BAMA.UA.EDU Mainframe cc: Discussion List <[EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: .EDU> HSM and CA-Disk 09/02/2005 06:46 AM Please respond to IBM Mainframe Discussion List <[EMAIL PROTECTED] .EDU> Dear list, at our shop (zOS 1.4 on a z890, three LPARs, Sharks DASD, tiny SMS environment) we have CA-Disk installed and we are evaluating whether is worth migrating to HSM. Can any of you point to whatever documentation/book/test cases which describes pros and cons of both products ? I would lightly support the migration to HSM because I know the product, and have no experience at all with CA-Disk. However, I'm afraid this argument won't be strong enough to convince my management. Personal experience or tips are appreciated. Thanks and best regards.
