RMM & HSM Question

2005-05-23 Thread Mark Wilson
Hello listers,

I have the following software stack:

  z/OS 1.4

  DFSMS/hsm

  DFSMS/rmm

We currently use HSM to do full & incremental volume backups on a daily
basis.

We are looking at changing some of our hardware with a view to exploiting
3592's.

Can I automatically (I can do most of the application stuff with JCL) stack
cartridges to a near full capacity using DFSMS/rmm and or HSM.

Is this possible?

If so how?

Kind Regards

Mark Wilson

Re: RMM & HSM Question

If you throw TMM into the mix, it is quite easy. TMM(Tape mount
Manager) works with SMS to turn tape mounts into disk file writes, even
to the point of reblocking for optimum disk use. Then you configure HSM
to migrate your TMM datasets to tape when the TMM volumes are xx% full.

Mark,

Search the DFSMShsm manuals for the word "STACK".

Re: RMM & HSM Question

2005-05-24 Thread R.S.
I'd suggest to review ARCCMDxx and change MARKFULL parameter. I don't
remember the names, but HSM gives you a choice: reuse partially written
tape next time, or treat it as full (markfull) and not mount it for
output again. The first option allows to utilize the capacity of the 3592.

BTW: RMM has nothing to do with the issue.

Re: RMM & HSM Question

2005-05-26 Thread Mike Wood
Mark, If your question is just related to filling HSM tapes, the answers
already posted are what you need; HSM knows how big the volumes are and
how to fill them if you let it. HSM can also stack dump tapes.
If you are also looking at using 3592 for other applications you may have
difficulty filling them, but you could look to move data from existing
tapes to the new, larger ones using a tool that will moves files and stack
them onto fewer volumes. There are several tools on the market that work
with RMM including a enw one from IBM; The IBM Tivoli Tape Optimizer
