Re: XML install questions.

2008-08-30 Thread Roger Bolan
I'm an application programmer, not a system programmer. One reason I use
separate CSI is for testing installation of my products and PTFs. We tend
to create CSIs as needed. This way I can play safely in my own little
sandbox without messing the system up. At the same time, my resulting
target libraries can still be made available to the other developers and
testers who want to work with my libraries instead of the system
libraries. The only complication I ever have for not being in the real
CSI is that I must sometimes create some fake sysmods for my own zones to
satisfy some pre-req conditions for things that aren't installed in my own
CSI.

Yes, the boss is the boss, and from the looks of this place I think he is a
pretty good technician. I doubt I could have set up the system any better then
he has.

How, that said, he and I didn't know much about the XML toolkit before this.

I just got through checking out the hard copy of the program directory.

I seems to me and viewed on page 21 that what they want is to receive the
product in the z/OS zones only

Because the follow on sample jobs provided after the receive are as follows:

Allocate
Mkdir
DDDEF
Apply
Accept.

So if you do the receive the product into the z/OS zones then can you run the
above jobs to sepeate this product out for z/OS? This is what appears is going
on here.

As far as I know it's not a separate product, but a part of z/OS. So I'm
curious why he wants it installed in a separate CSI. That seems likely to
cause problems when you install PTFs, or do upgrades of z/OS, etc.

Currently the XML Toolkit is an "optional component" of z/OS (and is
required for installation of CICS TS 3.2, as you've seen), so IMO
"belongs" in the z/OS CSI.

CICS TS 3.2 requires the XML Toolkit dataset as part of the SYSLIB
concatenation, so it becomes the same as any cross-SREL usage, putting a
PTF on XML Toolkit, wherever it is, means you might have to look at relinking
something under CICS TS. How many shops are doing that?

Perhaps you can point me to the place in you web site where the JCL to
do the SMP CSI create is.

http://home.flash.net/~mzelden/mvsutil.html

For future reference, similar to Mark's sample jobs on his website there
exists member GIMSAMPU in your SYS1.SAMPLIB data set that contains a
sample job to allocate and prime SMP/E CSI and other operational data sets.

A strange thing to post to a public forum. BTW, my hair is not colored.
There is plenty of grey you just can't see in the photo. You can hardly
see any hair at all!

Re: XML install questions.

2008-08-27 Thread Kenneth E Tomiak
I also needed to have the XML Toolkit installed for CICS TS 3.2. So I
downloaded it, built a global zone, defined some DDDEFs, did the receive,
apply, and accept. Pretty basic SMP/E stuff.

It does not just come with a z/OS 1.9 ServerPac, you have to select it with
the order. We did not, so we ordered it separate after the fact and then put it
in the z/OS zone.

More than one way to get it and put it where you want. Ordering with the
Serverpac is the easiest if you hav a new z/OS coming in. If not, do te way
system programmers have done it for years.

(Is claiming you are not good with SMP/E a way to build up your manager's
confidence in you?)

On the left hand side there is a link to the JOBs/DOC section. The jobs
are in that section. Look for the ones that start with SMPBLD*.

If for some reason you have a browser that doesn't support frames,
then scroll down or skip the recent changes section and there is also
an index of the various sections that you can click on.

It does assume you will install into the z/OS zones. If you ordered
it
with z/OS it would be in there. When I downloaded it separately
under
z/OS 1.6 and installed it, that is what I did.

I have some sample jobs on my web site to create a set of SMP/E
zones from scratch. Look in the JOBs section of my web site.

I still had all the stuff laying around from my first install of it
under
z/OS 1.6 and took a quick look at the functions / relfiles etc. and
I don't see any reason why it couldn't be installed into its own
set of zones. If this is just for some POC / trial, I guess that is

not a bad idea. But if you are planning on keeping and using it,
you might as well install it into the z/OS zones where it would
be delivered if you ordered it as part of ServerPac.

I've only had one boss that fully 'trusted' my judgment on mainframe technical
issues.
And, that's because he didn't know anything about them.
I tried to explain the important ones to him, but other than that, he left me
alone.

Re: XML install questions.

2008-08-27 Thread Brian Peterson
When I originally installed this, I installed it into the existing z/OS CSI for
my
z/OS operating system.

Then, every time I upgrade z/OS to a new release via ServerPack, I just
include XML in the order - no extra work, it's just there.
