Re: IBM z/OS Internet Library down?
The product lifecycle page appears to be having issues too. Its making me login now to view details, and then giving me access denied messages. It was working earlier this week. Re: [EXTERNAL] FedEx to move entirely to the cloud
Year 15 of the 3 year plan to move off the mainframe. Seems like I've heard that before. Oh yes, it will save us "x" amount of dollars. Of course we're going to spend 45 times the projected savings to get there, but that comes out of a different budget item so it's okay. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

Re: Attitude of companies toward mainframers working from home?
I've worked from home through multiple z/OS upgrades, various cpu upgrades, dasd upgrades, and tape migrations from physical to virtual. For people with the proper discipline, I have yet to see a justifiable reason for being in the office. This is the year 2020, not 1950. Except for perhaps on the top of Mount Everest, high speed internet is available just about everywhere. I'm not stuck in traffic jams when the phone rings. The worst part of my commute is occasionally tripping over the dog on my way to the desk. Re: Parmlib members change control?
Good lord no. I'm reminded that somehow ("magically I guess"), we all managed to survive the 60s, 70s, 80s, and even the early 90s without this formal change control nonsense. If you must track, then the product from action software works. Otherwise no, just no, easy solution below. current parm/proclib member - current name backout parm/proclib member - with a $ suffix at the end (if you want one more backlevel, then use a # as the suffix) Implementation and backout plans work wonders and have been way before formal change management was ever devised. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
Re: RSU maintenance strategy - Need expert suggestions
I usually try to implement maintenance twice a year, but each shop is somewhat different, depending upon ipl schedule, size of shop, workload, etc. If you're looking for a doc to justify your decision, there is this: https://www-03.ibm.com/systems/resources/zOS_Preventive_Maintenance_Strategy.pdf Bobbie Jo Justice Senior Systems Engineer -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

"I am most productive when I work from home. They can find me using Lync, or Sametime. " Ditto. I have been working from home for 5 years now, far more productive than I ever was in any office environment. We have team meetings I dial into, and those, along with the weekly status reports, let other people know what I am working on. If we need to have additional project related meetings (software or hardware upgrades) I dial into those. Email is available, and so is Skype. Re: Job Loyalty
There used to be loyalty, back before constant cost-cutting. I stayed at one place for 15 years in the 80s and early 90s. However with constant cost-cutting, the term "full time employee" is a misnomer. All it takes is "management by airline magazine" and any concept of a full time employee goes out the window in a heartbeat. Until the trend of "management by airline magazine" stops, it's off to the highest bidder or the company with the least amount of B.S. Re: zOS SYSPROG jobs
I've seen several for NYC and places close to NYC (no thank you). There are companies that don't like U.S. employees doing remote work for whatever bogus reason. They will post the job as "onsite only", then six months later they will outsource those jobs to India falsely claiming that "they can't find workers in the U.S.". Thankfully, there are remote opportunities available, check into companies such as Mainline and others. Re: remote system support (i.e. the data center is 2 states away from you).
I've been working remote for years. Currently working for a company where the client is on the other side of the country, so 3 days away by car. if you're worried about staying in tune to things, then make sure you attend conference call meetings, up to date on emails, IM, etc.. I don't do video, I do phone for meetings. I don't have the noise or constant distractions in an office environment so I am far more productive at home. The worst part of my "commute" is that I sometimes trip over the dog on the way to power up the computer.
