IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition for z/OS, Version 17 is now available!

2023-08-25 Thread Dan Zhang
IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition for z/OS, Version 17, is the latest
release of Java SDK on z/OS. It is certified to be compliant with Java Standard
Edition specification, providing z/OS developers the ability to leverage new
Java language features and stay current with the Java community. The maturity
of Java APIs, libraries, and frameworks increases developer velocity and
provides a consistent hybrid cloud development and deployment experience. This
new release signifies IBM Semeru Runtime continues to be an integral part of
the solution for the most difficult client problems, using the latest in Java
and IBM Z technology.

This release contains a full-featured Java SDK with OpenJDK implementation and
latest Eclipse OpenJ9 virtual machine. It delivers performance enhancements
that enable companies to leverage the benefits of IBM Z scalability,
reliability, availability, and serviceability, including exploitation of latest
IBM Z hardware features. It contains key IBM security providers that exploit
hardware cryptography such as the IBM Java Cryptography Extension Common
Cryptographic Architecture (IBMJCECCA). It includes IBMZSecurity provider
providing keystore support, and IBM Java Cryptography Extension Hybrid
(IBMJCEHYBRID) providing security provider failover support. It also contains
SunPKCS11 security provider that implements the Public Key Cryptography
Standards #11 (PKCS#11) with IBM modifications for the z/OS operating system.

Combining the performance and agility of Java with the security of IBM Z, users
can:
-Take advantage of the enterprise qualities of IBM Z, such as increased
performance and low-latency integration, by co-locating Java workloads with
core data and traditional applications.
-Develop robust batch applications using popular Java batch frameworks and
standards, with access to key z/OS services and data using the JZOS toolkit and
record generator.
-Deploy and manage transactional applications on z/OS with choice of middleware.
-Secure Java-based micro-services and API endpoints with the latest security
features, leveraging cryptographic acceleration and protection with hardware CP
Assist for Cryptographic Functions (CPACF) instructions and Hardware Security
Modules (HSM)
-Modernize their applications cost-effectively, using Java code that can run on
the IBM Z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP)

IBM SDK for z/OS Version 8 contains IBM security implementation whereas IBM
Semeru Runtime Certified Edition for z/OS Version 11 and 17 contain the OpenJDK
security implementation. Differences between these implementations might
require code changes to your applications. For more details, refer to the

New Enterprise COBOL for z/OS (COBOL) Migration Portal is here!

2021-04-29 Thread Dan Zhang
To assist COBOL users who are migrating from Enterprise COBOL 4 or earlier
versions to COBOL 6, the one-stop COBOL Migration Portal was launched in Feb.
2020, aggregating all the COBOL migration-related information including case
studies, COBOL experts interview videos, the cloud-based COBOL Migration
Assistant, COBOL Migration and Performance Tuning Webinars, FAQs, and many
other content assets. Since then, the portal has been a key and popular
resource among COBOL migration users.

In responding to the needs of users and improve the experience, now, we're
excited to announce that a new COBOL Migration Portal
(https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cobol-zos/6.3?topic=SS6SG3_6.3.0/migration-portal.html)
is live! Major changes in the new portal are as follows:

Design improvements:
-The portal landing page and the webinar register page now have a new modern
look that provides you with a consistent experience in IBM Documentation
(previously known as IBM Knowledge Center).
-The overall migration workflow for "Why" - "How" - "After" is optimized.

Content updates:
-Along with the new design, content assets are reorganized and streamlined
accordingly.
-Hot topics, such as user stories, EOS dates, manual download links, etc., are
shown directly on the landing page to make it more comprehensive and
informative, and you will not need to go further.
-Spotlight resources such as the webinars and the COBOL Migration Assistant are
highlighted, and you can get started quickly.
-Core ideas of videos are summarized so you can easily capture what the videos
are about or if you prefer plain texts.
-IBM DevOps tools are introduced that can speed up your migration process. In
addition, it is further clarified that you can leverage IBM Z VTP for an
efficient regression testing.

So why not take a tour around the new COBOL Migration Portal
(https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cobol-zos/6.3?topic=SS6SG3_6.3.0/migration-portal.html)
 right now?

If you have any comments or would like to see other topics in the COBOL
Migration Portal, please send them to compi...@cn.ibm.com. Any feedback would
be greatly appreciated!

Enterprise COBOL for z/OS Migration Portal – Find information about COBOL migration all in one place

2020-04-14 Thread Dan Zhang
Still have no idea about Enterprise COBOL for z/OS (COBOL) migration? Or are
you still struggling with your migration? For your easy access to all the COBOL
migration-related information, the one-stop COBOL Migration Portal
(https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SS6SG3/migration-portal.html) is
now live in the COBOL Knowledge Center (KC)!

In particular, you can:
-Read case studies to see how other companies have benefited from the migration.
-Watch the COBOL experts interview videos, where Roland Koo (Offering Manager
for IBM Enterprise Products and Compilers on z/OS) and Tom Ross (Captain COBOL)
describe why you should migrate to the latest COBOL V6 compilers and how to
migrate.
-Try the cloud-based COBOL Migration Assistant that helps you navigate through
the whole migration process.
-Register to the no-charge COBOL Migration and Performance Tuning Webinars,
where COBOL experts introduce recommendations and best practices during COBOL
migration and how to tune your applications after you migrate.
-Discover IBM Automatic Binary Optimizer for z/OS (ABO), which can accelerate
the COBOL migration and improve the performance of COBOL modules without a
recompilation plan.
-Check FAQs to quickly find answers and solutions when running into problems.

help along your migration and performance tuning journey.

Along with the portal live, the COBOL KC welcome page
(https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SS6SG3/entcobol_family_welcome.html)
also gets updated. There is a “what’s new” section listing the blogs that
summarize documentation updates due to COBOL continuous delivery and GAs, so
that you will know when the documentation gets refreshed and which topics are
refreshed. In addition, there is a COBOL video gallery, which contains all the
COBOL-related videos divided into different categories such as “technical
features”, “what’s new”, etc., and each video is presented with a short
description and a YouTube link.

If you have any comments or would like to see other topics in the COBOL
Migration Portal, please send them to compi...@cn.ibm.com. Any feedback would
be greatly appreciated!
