Re: GLOBALFOUNDRIES to Acquire IBM's Semiconductor Technology Business

2014-10-21 Thread Scott Chapman
I guess when you sell a line of business that's losing money, you end up
selling for a negative price.

Presumably they didn't just shutter it because they want continued access to
the production line output without having to go compete with other
manufacturers for foundry capacity.

Everything? And it's not like they're just giving it away.

Does exclusive mean that whatever prices GF chooses to set, IBM is not
allowed to seek a better deal from competitors?

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) agreed to pay Globalfoundries
Inc. $1.5 billion to take an unprofitable chip-manufacturing unit off its
hands.

IBM will pay Globalfoundries the cash over three years, the companies said
in a statement today. Globalfoundries will be IBM's exclusive provider of
specific Power processors for the next 10 years, in exchange for access to
IBM's intellectual property. IBM will take a third-quarter pretax charge of
$4.7 billion.
