Re: RES: RES: TS1140 tape transports

2021-10-31 Thread Radoslaw Skorupka
Yes, it is bunch of bits recorded on tape. And it seems there is no need
to support "mainframe CCW language", because it is VTS who writes on
(real) tape, not z/OS or any mainframe OS using VTS.

However the above is true now and it was true 5, 10, 15 or 20 years ago.
But VTS always had been using "mainframe-like" drives like Magstar or
Jaguar. More: even TS1155 was not supported by VTS.

I have never saw announcement or documentation claiming VTS supports LTO.
I suspect the reason of misunderstanding could be that VTS can be
attached to TS4500 or TS3500 or 3494 library. Each library support both
VTS-attached drives and distributed systems-attached drives which can be
TS11xx or LTO. Additionally TS3500 and 3494 could support native
mainframe drives as well, but only "mainframe family" (read: TS11xx or
older 3590s).
To simplify: VTS can be attached to TSx500 which is tape library. The
library, can be shared, it could support VTS and distributed systems.

It is what I understood from announcement, once tape drives will not connect
directly to z/OS channel but to VTS for destage.
VTS emulates 3490/3590 and can destage to any kind of tape, it is just a bunch
of bits to be recorded in tape.

Does it mean one can replace his TS1140 drives with LTO?
I don't think so.
Correction: I don't think it is possible for z/OS or VTS clients. Note:
Windows/Unix host could use TS1140 natively.
