Somebody who actually gets it that there was a world before the PC. Few minor

prefiguring virtualization before VMWare. Recommended reading for the glossy

On the 196 we have access to, we're running Centos 4.4 through 4.8 guests,
which is pretty much functionally equivalent, so I think as long as you're not
running them in LPARs, you should be fine.

Hi Terry,

Not your exact situation, but another data point for you to compare to: we
have a z196 running z/VM 6.1 hosting a guest running Red Hat 4.1.2-14
without issue. Hope someone else can provide a more direct comparison for
you.

Many years ago I was working for a company acquired by CA. Once we were
assigned our new user ids they soon became nicknames for many. Some were
funny. One poor guy was BRIDE. I became THITO. Anyway, one person was
automatically assigned a 'non-standard' name because his 'standard'
userid was offensive. I can't remember the exact way they generated the id.

In NL there were similar concerns when our car license plate scheme
went to 00-XXX-0 (for the curious foreigners, some English 4-letter
words take just 3 in Dutch). For starters, we dropped the vowels. Then
dropped the offensive words that look like someone just dropped the
vowels out of it. And dropped the abbreviations for offensive sayings,
and company names, etc... No surprise we run out of this name space
pretty quick.

I've seen at least one Virginia tag that shouldn't have passed muster (won't
share it on the list). And I've always wondered about CA PMFIDs, which are
the first 3 letters of your last name/first 2 of your first name/2-digit
number. What would they do if your name was Kyle Fuchs? Or Tyrone Shiplett?

If it's VSE, you need to post on the VSE list. (I am on the VSE list and

Thank you for trying...

DRET (or maybe D.R.E.T.) is some ancient VSE program product (or maybe one
of those PRPQ or whatever thingys). It sort of reminds me of linux 'dd' -
take any input, move it to any output, with any of a gazillion assorted
manipulations/mangles along the way.

Without a manual, there is very little chance of getting correct syntax.

Thanks!

I had the same question.. what’s DRET? It took a but of Googling,
and that turned up:
http://www.ibm.st/ibm/vse/136294
which showed:
  ** 5798-DBC COPYRIGHT IBM CORP. 1979 LICENSED MATERIAL –
PROGRAM PROPERTY OF IBM **
DRET GENERAL PURPOSE UTILITY * U289TBL

More searches for 5798-DBC didn’t turn on anything useful in the
limited time I had remaining.

Shimon,
Some of us old packrats have a lot of manuals and other assorted
items. DRET is not a term I am familiar with. It is apparently an
acronym for something. Perhaps if we (I) knew, it might ring some
bells on a possible location of that manual you are looking for.

Hi,
We (mainframe sysprogs) have been forced to relocate our
offices several times over the last couple of years, and just
discovered that we seem to have lost something.

Does anyone out there know if it is possible today to get
a DRET manual? We still have and use DRET in many VSE
job streams, but if you have ever seen it, you know we NEED
that manual. ;-)

If you don't know what I am talking about - thanks anyway.

Thanks for any advice,
Shimon
