Backula on Linux

2011-01-20 Thread Brian Ferguson
I've got a user who's trying to get Backula running on a Debian 5 system.

But we are not having a lot of luck.

Anybody here have any ideas on resources I can point my guy to for 'VM'

tricks?

He can't seem to get backula to 'append' correctly to a 3590 tape volume.

VMDBK and Control Registers

2009-12-07 Thread Brian Ferguson
Folks,

I have gotten tasked to re-work a piece of code that worked in VM/ESA 2.4

for z/VM 5.4

And either I'm blind or I'm not thinking straight.

Apparently the Control Registers for a guest are not in the VMDBK

Anybody know where they moved to?

OSA-ICC Availability on a 2066-003

2009-11-19 Thread Brian Ferguson
I got a query from one of my accounts.

They have a spare port on an OSA card (OSA Express) and are of the opinio
n
that they can use that port to do an Integrated Console.

And then they could drop some additional hardware/software that is costin
g
them money.

I've tried digging around, but I can't find a definitive answer.
(I think I must not be getting a keyword right in my search)

I think it won't work because the microcode for it is just not present in

the 2066, even though the OSA card itself could.

Anybody care to tell me where I can find a definitive answer?

Re: SFSTAR Package

2008-03-03 Thread Brian Ferguson
Well,

It seems to packup the files, at least it does not give an error and
creates what appers to be a file containing the files I want to move.

But when I attempt to load them, I get this:

DADNN2A:FERGUSON.AAA.TEST

I'm attempting with this code to move the WEBSHARE tree under SFS to
another location, but while the DUMP seems to work, the load does not.

SFSTAR Package

2008-02-29 Thread Brian Ferguson
Anybody got this working on a 5.3 system?

The package seems like juyst what I need to do some movement of partial

SFS structures, but it does not seem to work consistantly.

I have gotten the RXFLOW, TEXTFLOW, REXXCSL, SUPERSAY and PIPEFILE
packages.

But it still seems to not want to work.

DFDSS and an IFL

2007-03-09 Thread Brian Ferguson
I've got a site that is trying to use their VM system (4.4 on an IFL) to

stage MVS volumes for disaster recovery.

They dump the MVS system off using DFDSS, and restore them onto the
disaster system using standalone DFDSS under VM

This way they don't need to actually run and licence MVS on the recovery

CPU, since MVS only runs during the actual tests. The staging allows them

to drop the recovery time considerably.

And the VM system is running on the IFL on the box.

They have dumped the MVS volumes to tape using DFDSS.

And are attempting to use a standalone version of DFDSS to place the
volumes onto DASD attached to the VM image.

The DFDSS being used is from a z/OS 1.7 system, they genned it onto a DAS
D
volume and moved it to the new VM system and IPL the DASD to bring DFDSS

up to do the restore.

The old CPU was a z900 and this worked just fine.

Since the move to a z9-BC however, they get:

HCPMCV1459E The
virtual machine is placed in check-stop state due to a system

malfunction with CPU 00.

When they attempt to IPL the Standalone DFDSS code.

Has the IBM IFL code on the z9 series changed?

Anybody have any other suggestions?

SSL Server for z/VM

2007-02-01 Thread Brian Ferguson
Folks,

Anybody have any suggestions as to the distro to use for the SSL server

for TCPIP?

We are going to be setting up SSL servers, and are thinkig about what bas
e
Linux to use, obviously it should be a small one, but does anybody on the

list have a suggestion?

IBMLINK Issues

2006-12-01 Thread Brian Ferguson
Anybody else having a problem ordering service via IBMLINK?

I'm getting an order contains no valid PTFs no matter what I enter.

A problem report to IBMLINK gave me a 'we know it does not work'

But only for VMSES stuff, MVS is fine.

And maybe it will get fixed sometime this month (maybe)

Perhaps if enough people whine something might be done?

My problem record, for any interested IBMr was 70438,004

SSH and VM

2006-10-25 Thread Brian Ferguson
Hello,

I'm getting a request to improve security on my VM system by replacing th
e
existing REXEC service with SSH.

(Like the MVS guys did...)

And I've looked around and I'm wondering if someone could direct me to a

short explanation on just where SSH for a VM system could be found.

z/VM 5.2

Thanks
