Nonsense! Who is better qualified to answer a problem if you've just
solved it on your own? And now your answer is in the archives for anyone
else to search and find! Good show!

Besides, *none* of us have ever had an insight into a problem five
seconds after pressing SEND, right? (I avoid this by not thinking for
five seconds after pressing SEND. All my insights come six seconds after
pressing SEND.)

installing z/VM 5.3 from minidisk

2007-07-30 Thread Stricklin, Raymond J
Greetings, esteemed listmembers.

I am attempting to install z/VM 5.3 from DVD to ECKD (3390-3), second
level, using minidisk instead of FTP.

I have a minidisk, accessed as filemode W, full of files like the
following:

 CKD5000A IMAGEW1 F 1028780196 7/10/07
16:44:36
 CKD50009 IMAGEW1 F 1028 4080 1024 7/10/07
16:44:36
 CKD50008 IMAGEW1 F 1028 4080 1024 7/10/07
16:44:34

 (...c.)

I have followed the instructions in the Guide for Automated Installation
and Service for V5R3. I run DVDPRIME and INSTPLAN, and everything looks
good for installing to ECKD until I try to run INSTDVD, when I get this
error:

 HCPIDV8300E FILE FBA22200 IMAGE W NOT FOUND,
HCPIDV8376E INSTDVD EXEC ENDED IN ERROR,
 Ready(00100);,

Note the unexpected reference to an FBA installation file. Why would
that happen?

Here's the relevant excerpt from my console, showing what I assume is a
full ECKD prep, followed by an FBA failure:

Ok, totally tacky, following up on my own message, but I got my problem
solved, after banging my head against a co-worker for a few minutes.

It turns out having files lying around on your 191 from old second-level
installs (like 5.2, 5.1, ... *cough* ...4.1) plays havoc with this whole
process. INSTPLAN is not picky about which filemode $INST$ $FILE$ is on,
and found a copy from our 5.2 upgrade in filemode A to read and update.
INSTDVD EXEC is picky and expects it to be on filemode C, where it had
been untouched by INSTPLAN. I started over with a clean 191 and it works
(is working now) great

That was a fun one. Thanks, guys!
