Keep up the good work, Judy! >>>The second video appears to be a nice running walk (something Europeans likely haven't heard much of) and the first...? Looks like simply a fast walk--doesn't even look like a flatwalk to me, as the rider is moving so much in the saddle.<<< Thanks for your input, gals! The video of the dark horse with the western saddle is a fox trot; the lighter brown horse is doing a stepping pace. I'm not so concerned with the comments from the young girls from Slovenia. Looking back, we heard the same things from Icelandic owners here, up to a few years ago. Most have progressed along with us. When reading these messages, it seemed like voices from the past! They don't have the opportunity of experience and knowledge of gaited horses that we have here. They have a limited view of how and what a gaited horse is supposed to do; and what is *normal*. Gaits are "warp" speed, not slow and controlled. You *have* to have the special saddle; you *have* to have the shoes and boots; you *have* to have the icelandic trainer; you *have* to fit the picture or you're not right. "We all see 'correct' in some context of what we are used to.~~Elaine Elmer" We have been able to raise the level of knowledge of the Icelandic Horse owners in North America. They will just have to catch up to us at some point! We're doing good! Kudos to all who are taking the training of their horses into their own hands, who are studying gaits, conformation, anatomy, and using this information in breeding. We are setting the pace for the world! Oh, found this really nice picture ... no noseband! Judy http://icehorses.net http://clickryder.com <>

No, we have flood irrigation so there is water in the pasture all summer. It barely gets dry before we flood it again. And the areas where the horses walk through gates become low spots that typically stay wet all the time. Our soil is sandy, so I guess you could say wet sandy soil. :o) Cheryl ToltallyICE at Sand Creek Icelandic Horse Farm Icelandic Horses and Icelandic Sheepdogs email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.toltallyice.com

can't do too much trimming/filing not a whole lot of hoof wall there! nice shape from the bottom though... I'm no expert really so I don't mean to sound like I am... just know my own horses feet really well, LOL! Frog/balls look a bit dry ... Slow growing feet huh? I can't get by without a trim every 5 weeks. Maybe a hoof supplement would build some hoof wall and sole... seems a little low in the pic and might be why the hoof wall is so thin in that too much pressure is happening on that edge?. ..but I never have used those so don't know anything about if they really work. Are you in dry hard soil? (watch you'll say no!, LOL) or super sandy soil? If so, maybe some water puddles (mud puddles in front of the watering troughs) might help some... And if this horse is doing fine, then why try to fix what ain't broke as they say my 2 cents... [IceHorses] Homeopathics
Hi Laree, Here is an article on homeopathy for horses that you might find interesting. http://www.todayshorse.com/Articles/SkinConditionsandHomeopathy.htm If you google "homeopathic for sweet itch" you will find alot of links...many in the UK. Homeopathics are energy/vibrational medicines. It works via the "like cures like" principle. For example, if your eyes were watery from allergies, you would take Allium cepa (onion). Or if you were bitten by an insect, you would take Apis (bee). Homeopathics are diluted to the level that none of the original material is left, just their energetic vibrations. I looked on Energique's website and it seems that their formula is an herbal blend (although I could not find an ingredient list). Herbal medicine is very different from homeopathy. Do you know what antigens are present in their formula? Is it a cullicoides antigen? Antigens stimulate antibody production. Trish

I think , considering that we don't know the horses history with trims etc... his hooves look good to me... they didn't file the edges which I always do but a nice thick hoof wall... too long toe? maybe but like I said we don't know the horse... not overly long at a glance to me. heel too high/and underslung... not drastically so. The wall is a bit thinner on one side so something is going on but it's not severe from a picture and could just be "this horse" I think the feet look good in general... I like a cleaner sole myself for a picture! LOL!

[IceHorses] the icey "look"
icelandics seem to do this thing other horses don't... where they just stand and stare quizzically, with a mild expression, but just absolutely unwaveringly. I used to think Nasi was retarded or something and then began to figure out he was intently scrutinizing whatever he was staring at. When my husband works in the pasture fixing a fence or something nasi stands at his shoulder and just stares motionless at what he's doing the whole time. Then camping with Tivar, I slept about five feet away with the truck window down so I could hear and see if anything went wrong and several times in the nite i would wake and he was right there staring intently. Then as I watched him one time he moved and stared intently at the mare next door and after about two minutes she squealed and kicked at him so horses must not like to be stared at. my other horses, if anything, try to pretend they AREN'T staring, jaspar will even sneak looks and pretend he doesnt care what you do. its just interesting. janice -- yipie tie yie yo

[IceHorses] Inguinal bilateral cryptorchid
I had the colts gelded today. Isak's was quite easy since he'd been fully equipped since he was about 2 weeks old. She sedated Landi, and still couldn't feel anything - at this point most vets would have stopped. I told her it was ok if she wanted to go ahead with full anesthesia, and see if she could find anything...if not, it was going to mean a trip to the vet school. We put him on the ground, and she still couldn't feel anything, so she had me hold his legs up in the air - finally, she could feel something tiny on one side. She was about to give up, then she found the other one, even smaller. So, she made the incision, and luckily Cary got home about that time, because Landi started trying to get up, obviously needing more drugs. Cary was able to hold him until she could get more into him. It took more searching to find them, but she did - I was sweating bullets until she found both, hoping she hadn't started something she couldn't finish. Anyway, he will probably be very sore, sorer than Landi, and at increased risk of infection. He'll get antibiotics for a week or so, just in case. It was sort of scary to see how quickly Landi went from being completely "out" to struggling to stand. I feel bad for him, but Isak doesn't look any worse for the wear. I'm really glad Cary timed his arrival home so well. She said his condition would be considered bilateral inguinal cryptorchidism. Landi is 11 months old. >>> Karen, what did you think of riding at Dupont? I still haven't taken my horses there yet. It was just lovely. Most of the trails were great and well-marked, with very good maps available. We took our time and tried to get oriented to all the different parking lots, etc. but we didn't see a fraction of the trails. Difficulty level would be more like Moses Cone than Leatherwood. The main advantage to Moses Cone is that it's at a higher altitude so will be noticeably cooler this summer. We drove up into that Ultimate Ride Campground, and we weren't impressed. I think when we go back, we'll rent the house and get the better accommodations for horses and humans. It was worth it to us. Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My treed Marciante (which I recently unloaded) was also an endurance type. My TWH has a stronger trot preference than pace (he gaits too) and I never had a problem posting, or jumping for that matter. I also used it for the old QH I had, and he had a real ugly, bouncy trot. The heels need to be lowered gradually and opened up. Also the whole foot is too long and is causing stress at the sides (quarters) of the foot where you can see chipping and breaking happening. If this horse has always been barefoot and s/he has heels like that, the owner will have to ensure that s/he receives trims regularily or the strength of the horn of the foot could cause some separation (white line separation) if the hoof is allowed to get too long between trims. And the strength of the horn can cause the foot to naturally contract...so yes...regular trims are a must. Wanda

[IceHorses] Quick Saddle Fit Test
When you are in the saddle that you are "testing", see if you can walk along on the horse with your fingers (one or a couple) under the front of the saddle, to the side (near the button area, not inside the gullet), to see if the saddle is pinching the horse. You can also do this with the back of the saddle to see if it's digging into the horse. Quite an eye opener! hahaha, if it aint broke why fix it?? That horse in the second one is gaiting like a dream, and in the first, what the heck bit is she talking about? Even if it was severe mechanically, the horse is being ridden on a totally slack rein... so lets get thsi straight--- if a horse is being ridden in a little teeny greyhound narrow saddle pinching the dickens out of him and a tight noseband and making him ventroflex to gait, then THATS better than a saddle with a horn?? confused... I'm sorry but i can't get over this...you say you don't use boots, noseband, shoes of any kind (normal icelandic equipment) but you use this harsh (strong) bits (kandaren)and western saddles? Special saddles were made for icelandic horses for purpouse...they have like in front legs high first bone and if you put saddle on it that will hurt the horse or it will prevent him to move his front legs properly. Well you asked what gaites the horses are doing...i say that are no gaites i'm sorry! one of them on that dark brown horse was something between walk and trot, other was only fast walking-not tolt! i really don't know what were you thinking when you posted this wideos. i really can't be quiet about this because i have 3 icelandic horses and i really don't know half of what i can learn but i know that i have to at least ride with proper saddle and bridle and you don't have to use boots if you don't train for competition...and that boots help horses to balance not to push them to have higher action in front legs. i compete with my horses and the first thing i saw was your atitude about boots and other things that others use. i hope you'll write me back because i would really like to hear your comment on this. best regards from slovenia (sorry about my english...it's not my first language) julia" Judy http://icehorses.net http://clickryder.com

Hi Janice >lately there has been a change in the way I ride, i dont know what, >but I have an ache afterward in the middle of my back just below my >shoulder blades We are in the midst of a clinic with Peggy Cummings and I suspect that you are lifting through your sternum and that will give a lot of discomfort through the mid back. If you have a photo of yourself riding from the side I will ask Peggy to look at it and give you some suggestions if you like. One thing is that if your saddle is sitting even slightly downhill in front that can trigger a rider to hold in that part of the back. That is where slight shimming on either side in the front can really help. Robyn Icelandic Horse Farm Robyn Hood & Phil Pretty Vernon BC Canada www.icefarm.com

Thanks, Robyn. The only one on your list I have read is A Good Horse Has No Color - loved that book. As for the closing of the libraries - isn't that amazing? There is a lot of truth to the theory > that a treed saddle might fit a horse perfectly--until he moves. there are some cases where a treeless is bad. Like my jaspar has a prominent spine even when very fat. It sticks up, knobby all the way, and when rubbed, he gets a fistula. He had a bad one from a poor saddle pad and a tucker saddle and it became chronic, and a treeless aggravates it. (I ditched the Tucker). Perhaps before he ever got the fistula if I had him in a treeless with proper shims it wouldnt have happened. But as it is it is such that he can only be ridden in a saddle with absolute spine clearance, and what works best for him actually is my orthoflex because with the panels and booties theres nothing on his spine whatsoever, not even a saddle pad. Horses with real real prominent withers also, you can't put a wide tree or treeless where it will sit down and rub right on the withers. Fistulous withers and spine is a very serious life threatening chronic situation. I think Liz said it best when she said you really shouldnt mix and match. You should either have a treed saddle that fits or a treeless that is completely flexible with a good saddle pad that will have shims or whatever to protect the spine. I sent my orthoflex back and had the new special short, extra flexible panels put on, and they ground off some of the back of the saddle which allows even more flex and fit for a shorter backed horse and so far it works good for two of my horses. I think we always need to NEVER forget that no one saddle fits every horse and you have to have an open mind always with each horse and their individual problems. Like Tivar, I really much prefer a treed saddle, my orthoflex, a Tucker even for ME but for my horses each one has to have what he needs and Tivar MUST have a treeless. Janice -- yipie tie yie yo

Not like in sweden as the summer pasture are saved to get more grass (smaller spaces) and when its ready you let the horse out on its new pasture! -The horses that are stabled during winter stallions ,training horses and foals are not going out on pasture untill around 20 of june and as stallions often has a lot to do with mares this has not been a problem, training horses need more energy and foals/yerlings Grow alot also. -I was at a clinic about breeding the otherday they talked about as the horse population was down to under 3000 horses in 1743 the genepool is very little so with this nature have weed out many bad genes as we do have very low genetic problems within the breed. the also talked about that we have to look out for inbreeding % is increasing much know after this BLUP system was set on as the hosrse that are high in BLUP is very related. >Also, please explain to me the pronounced hoof rings that are so >common in horses just imported from Iceland.
