RE: [IceHorses] Is This Tight?
Here's a pretty typical World Championship victory pose: http://www.ihsgb.co.uk/winners.jpg The first time I saw a posed picture over-bent like that, probably five years ago, I asked, and was assured that it was only a bad moment in time - an instant where 2-3 stallions were misbehaving and the riders grabbed them back for a photo op. This has been classic victory pose that I've seen at every single World Championship since I've been watching the results.I rarely see that position posed in a victory picture even among the highest-level competitive dressage riders who use Rollkur, like Anky. They may train in that controversial over-bent position that I really don't like, but at least they usually try to drop the rein contact the instant as the competition is over... Anyway, that's why I felt so obligated to ask about the Icelandic showing dressage pictures that Judy submitted recently. Sure, that was an individual rider, who appeared to be showing at a very low level. There's no reason for holding the horses so tight like that, whatever the discipline, whatever the country, no matter what the level. I saw several pictures of horses moving out in that overbent pose in WC pictures submitted by others. I don't know how to make that correlation clearly, without risking hurting someone's feelings. But, I think it's important to draw the correlation, so we can draw attention to the practice at every single level. I certainly don't mean to pick on an amateur rider, but I see a trend that needs to be noted and stopped. Granted, the British team looks better than most of the pack - thanks very much - but as you commented yourself, Mic, they didn't score well at all. Karen Thomas, NC

RE: [IceHorses] Betty
We are Betty. We are the (mostly) mature first-time horse-buying women, the ones who are fulfilling our childhood dreams of owning and riding a horse / pony. I consider myself very much a typical Betty in the USA horse-world sense, but PLEASE don't tell Cary I'd also consider him one! I see a lot of Betty's at a typical event like one of the Parelli weekend seminars, or the recent Lynn Palm/Jane Savoie event - sometimes by the hundreds or even thousands. The Betty's (and Billy's) may have different breed ideals, and may have different preconceptions about western-versus-English tack, but what I see in common with so many US horse-people is the desire to have a relationship with a mannerly, safe, pleasant riding PARTNER that won't kill them and will keep them active and out enjoying nature. I see Betty's much like me in all ages, from pre-teens to the elderly (hard to think of Susan's mom as elderly though!) and I see male Billy's and female Betty's. I also see Betty's much like myself who are totally new to horses, as well as those who've owned horses more than my 19 years. I'd have to say the one area of the USA horse market that I've touched that I feel the least like a typical Betty would be in the USA's traditional Icelandic clique. I can fit into a lot of different horse cliques, but sometimes I feel like I don't have the secret decoder ring to fit in with that crowd. (I've never gotten into any breed crowds before though.) Thank gosh for this list...of Betty's! Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [IceHorses] Is This Tight?
I would ask what specific problem you see with the saddles in the photos of the British riders, seeing as 2 were using floating panel Trapezius saddles and one was in a treeless? (not sure about the others). My point was not specifically about British riders. Point being that it's hard to pick out good pictures when there's so many things going on such as the tight saddles, nosebands, bits, shoes, boots, whips, contact, rider's seat, etc. Say there's a picture such as loose rein tolt. It's great that the horse is tolting without the contact. But we have to remember that he may still be negatively affected by the tight saddle; he still has shoes and boots on, and the rider's still carrying a whip, and maybe sitting on the cantle of the saddle, all of which the horse will be conscious of in doing his 30-second run. There are just so many things that go into producing the show tolt, that we can't see what's natural for the horse. It's not a question, at this point, that what is being shown is mechanically induced; otherwise why would there still be discussions about it. If not mechanical, it would have been very easy for riders to stand up and show their horses barefoot, bootless, treeless, nosebandless, bitless, whipless, casual rein. Re: [IceHorses] Conformation, or the way the horse is ridden...?
http://gallery.mac.com/jtfreeman#100035/1A9B0410bgcolor=black Look at the front foot of the chestnut horse that's in front...Look how far it's off the median line of his front leg. Here's some info about that: Leaning to the Side (Lumbering, Canting) At times, you will see horses who lean from side to side on their front ends while being ridden under saddle. This movement is a type of lumbering (also called canting), the throwing of the front quarters over the grounded foot. This is not a natural movement and probably will not be seen in unstarted horses. However, horses who have learned to go that way under saddle, may, at times, exhibit this movement at liberty. There are several possible considerations that may play a part in, or contribute to, leaning under saddle: [] The horse is very lateral; he may be performing a 4 beat gait, however, the leaning (lumbering) from side to side is indicative of his pacey-ness. [] The horse's back may be so tight or ventroflexed that his only allowable movement is lumbering. [] Too much rein contact. [] Too much ground-contact time for the weight-bearing front foot. [] Misconception of the rider that pulling on the left rein when the right leg is in the air (or vice versa), somehow the neck gets out of the way and the foot goes further forward or higher. [] The horse is being pushed too soon, too fast, in his training. [] The horse is being pushed onto the forehand disconnecting the hindquarters. [] Pain, inhibiting the horse from using his hind limbs correctly. [] Weak hindquarters. [] Crooked front legs JoAnn says: What you are seeing and describing occurs in some Peruvian Paso horses. I know exactly what you mean. There is a spanish/peruvian word description for it, I will find out and let you know. It is one of the worst defects you can have in a Peruvian horse. When viewing the horse coming at you, it looks like the whole body of the horse is leaning first over to one side and then the other. This way of moving is frequently found in horses that are base-wide in the rear and are compensating with the swaying side to side in the front to deal with the lack of strength in the rear. A large part of the side to side swaying movement is because the horse is actually pulling itself forward with the front leg first on one side and then the other instead of impulsing with the rear legs. Base-wide means the hind legs of the horse are set too wide apart and many times wider apart than the front legs--in some cases, if you stand directly behind the horse, you can see both front legs in the space between the rear legs. This type of horse frequently also has wide termino and an ewe neck, which produces what looks like a high head carriage (with an ewe neck, the horse cannot carry its head low, especially under saddle and in the bit), which makes it look (to some) impressive, especially when seen from the side. The reason it is considered a bad defect (aside from the obvious lack of aesthetics) is because horses that move that way are experiencing undue stress on the front end and frequently do not remain sound past early ages. http://iceryder.net/leaning.html Judy http://icehorses.net http://clickryder.com

That little gal hopped off one trailer and onto another like she'd been doing it her whole life. We're actually about five hours south of Bend, but go through there on the way to some of the Central Oregon endurance rides. As the crow flies, we're probably 15 miles from the California border. There are no roads, so by car, it's about 1 1/2 hours in any direction. Nancy
RE: [IceHorses] WAY off topic
i would be better able to believe either you or raven but neither version makes even the least vestige of sense, does it?? Bruce Springsteen wrote the song and sang the words I sent. Manfred Mann's Earth Band changed the words slightly using Raven's version (they had the big hit). I'm sure there's something on the net that will tell you what he meant! Cherie

Re: [IceHorses] OT Horse For Janice's Friend
Janice - I was looking through this rescue's horses available and saw this guy: http://www.habitatforhorses.org/adoptahorse/charles.html I couldn't remember if your friend's father wanted a mare or a gelding. Charles seems like a nice guy. Looks like he is only 14.1h though. Sarah Msla, MT

--- Raven [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't get this ...freak show? http://rookertrainingstable.com/stallions/clout.html I watched the video of this horse and what I want to know is when you see the man riding this horse, is he just a lousy rider, or does this type of park trot make posting impossible? I would like to ride a horse like this in a proper saddle and see what it feels like and to see how proper tack and proper riding would affect the horse as opposed to this freak show. I searched the archives of the treeless list for everything good and bad about these saddles, and I still MIGHT buy one one of these days and try it out because I've heard mostly good things from people who have bought them, and mostly bad things from people who havn't!
