[IceHorses] Nancy- My Grandpa
>> but where was your grandfather's home? Hi Nancy, My grandpa Antonio, was from General Bravo, a small village outside of Guadalupe, Mexico. His parents were from France and they moved to Mexico right after their marriage. He was a law man in the village his entire life. He was so dedicated to his job, that even after he retired ...he would get up every morning, have his breakfast, put on his uniform, walk down to the village shops and make the "rounds". Then he would go home, have lunch, take a nap and get up and go fiddle with his horses and do animals chores. He had a farm with all sorts of animals, he bred horses and brahman cattle. He always had at least 5 or 6 dogs running around him and that was so much fun to have all those dogs for me to play with. The house was filled with bird cages and he loved parrots, he would teach them to talk and cuss. HA! Of course as a young girl I did not know the parrots were swearing. My grandpa was such a special man, he was my hero. I spent pretty much all my summers at his farm, out of 9 kids in my family, I was the only one who got the "horse gene". I have many wonderful memories, and he was the one adult in my life that believed in me. I didn't have the best "home life", spent many years in and out of foster care. But the one constant thing in my life was my grandpa, his great love for me and of course...I had my horses. Here's a link to some photos I just uploaded. These were taken about two years before my grandpa died, he was 92 when he died in 1993. I still miss him. Re: [IceHorses] mic xmas
>>pagan does not equal druid :) Hi...druids are considered pagans. Pagans are earth people, or rather those that worship different gods, goddess and the natural world, such as animals, the land, sea, sky, sun, moon, stars, and the seasons. A druid can also be wiccan. All pre-Christian faiths. Both paths honor the earth. Both celebrate the same eight fire festivals. Pagan Druid orders use Celtic traditions, such as the Gods and Goddesses of the Celtic Pagan. But, yes you correct not all druids are pagans. >;p] Some are very Christian. Bright Blessings, Raven

Hi Jeanette >>>I think teaching these guys to pull trees out of the woods shouldn't be too hard, I actually started my horses by ground driving and advanced them to leadline with a kid on them before I rode them myself I know several people who have done light logging work with Icelandics and quite a few drive, it has worked well and there have been no problems. Not sure why there would be a problem with ringbone. Certainly Icelandics were used in Iceland to do farm work - not clearing logs but pulling other things. We start all our horses ground driving as well and carry on with a few of them for driving. If they are suitable for driving we have found Icelandics to be very easy and tractable to drive. [IceHorses] logging and pulling
Annie, I live close to Baltimore but I have my larger place between Cumberland and Keyser, in Rawlings so we could have been neighbors. I wanted to retire there but who knows what the future will bring with kids and all. I am planning to do a lot of camping and trail riding to Dan's Mountain top, state land that our place attaches to and I want to have a big ride for FRIDA riding club this spring up there. I have so much woods that it just seems like such a waste to not give my plump horses something to do when I take them up for a stretch other than trail ride. I would like to have horses with a little bit of a job that makes me feel like we can make the place better for us all. I still don't have a barn up there, just corral panels to keep them in. I think teaching these guys to pull trees out of the woods shouldn't be too hard, I actually started my horses by ground driving and advanced them to leadline with a kid on them before I rode them myself. I don't have the tack to do it yet but we have a lot of places nearby that Amish made working gear is available and I think I would get something made for the Hafllinger as they are pretty common and about the same size as iceys. Did you team pull the logs or was it all one horse per job? You can email me privately if we are taking up too much chatting space. I always thought my guys looked kind of drafty.

Re: [IceHorses] Logging and Pulling
Hey, small world. I lived in Keyser, Mineral Co. W.V. for about 10 years. I had my Icelandics there on Knobley Mountain and worked for the C&P Phone company as a lineman. I didn't do a lot of log-pulling with my Icelandics. When I first came to own them I was living in Morgan Co. W.V. (Berkeley Springs). I asked some of the locals how they started their young horses pulling a wagon. Several people said that they started them by pulling logs, which makes sense, when you consider how much timber cutting goes on there. So, an old-timer named Charlie Smith got me set up by taking a regular horse trace harness and cutting it down to fit an Icelandic. "Never buy a pony harness," he said, "because pony harness is always crap." I really don't think that is true any more. I started some young horses pulling logs but quickly learned that the logs really don't contribute much. Driving them by walking behind them worked better all around. My horses didn't suffer from any ring bone or other problems as a result of pulling logs, but then I didn't do it very long. I did manage to train some Icelandics to pull sulkies and sleighs in the winter. You must live somewhere in Maryland? [IceHorses] sleipner is rudolph
from the net: Santa Claus is predominantly based on three different characters from mythology, and also from history. The first of these characters is the old Holly King of the medieval Renaissance, an aspect of the original Wild Man. The second is the Viking god Odin, who would drop presents at the foot of his sacred pine tree on the winter solstice (one of the origins of Christmas presents) to be received by the faithful. Santa's reindeer are also part of the image of Odin and are a representation of his eight-legged horse, Sleipner. -- yipie tie yie yo

[IceHorses] Icelandic Christmas
found this on the net: The Icelandic Yule Lads and The 'Christmas Cat' Icelanders have not one, but thirteen Santas, or Yule Lads. These lads are not related to Santa Claus in any way. They are descendants of trolls and were originally used to scare children. In the last century, however, they have become a lot friendlier. The number of Yule Lads has varied throughout the centuries but now they are consistently thirteen. The number 13 was first seen in a poem in the 18th century and the names that they carry today was published in Jón Árnason's folklore collection of 1862. Their current names are: Stekkjastaur (Sheepfold Stick), Giljagaur (Gilly Oaf), Stúfur (Shorty), Þvörusleikir (Spoon-licker), Pottasleikir (Pot-licker), Askasleikir (Bowl-licker), Hurðaskellir (Door-slammer), Skyrgámur (Skyr-glutton), Bjúgnakrækir (Sausage-pilfer), Gluggagægir (Peeper), Gáttaþefur (Sniffer), Ketkrókur (Meat-hook) and Kertasníkir (Candle-begger). As you can tell from these names, the lads are very mischievous and they have retained their unique characteristics to this day. One by one The Yule Lads live in the mountains with their parents, Grýla and Leppalúði. They come to town, one by one, in the days before Christmas. The first one arrives on December 12th and the last one on December 23rd. Formerly, they tried to pilfer their favorite things or play tricks on people (hence their names), but now their main role is to give children small gifts. Every child in Iceland puts their best shoe on their bedroom window sill on December 12th (some try to put their boot, in the hope that they may get more, but so far the Yule Lads haven't been fooled) and they get a small gift from each lad when he arrives in town. But beware not to be naughty or the lad might just leave a rotten potatoe in your shoe! Their original clothing are rags that are similar to farmer's clothes in the 18th century. and they are often seen carrying their favorite food. Nowadays, however, they are usually seen in familiar red clothing with white beards and black boots. They often make appearances at Christmas dances, which are very popular among Icelandic children. Children (adults are of course welcome to join them) dance around a Christmas tree and sing carols. The highlight of the dance is when one of the Yule Lads joins the celebration and dances and sings with the kids and usually gives them a goody bag before he leaves. The 'Christmas Cat' An old Icelandic folklore states that everyone has to get one new piece of clothing at Christmas. Anyone who was left out was in danger of being eaten by a malicious beast called the Christmas Cat. The Christmas Cat is Grýla's cat (see Yule Lads) and every effort was made to ensure that no-one would "go to the Christmas Cat". Thus, everyone worked very hard to make a new piece of clothing for each member of the household. The first stories about the Christmas Cat arose in the 19th century and were probably aimed at lazy children. It seemes to have worked as, to this day, everyone gets a new piece of clothing either before or at Christmas. Similar stories exist about a bull in the Baltics and about a goat in Norway. The day after Christmas the first lad returns to the mountains. Then they leave, one by one, until the last one leaves on January 6th, which is the last day of the Christmas season -- yipie tie yie yo

My Fox freaked out in the roundpen, acted like he was panicked as soon as I put him in there. All I wanted was to contain him in a small area to work with him! Next time I tried to take him to the RP he dragged me like a water skier and broke away and bolted for his paddock. All day we would go at it. i decided it was my goal to get him to walk mannerly into the roundpen. After three long exhausting days I realized man, it was just a power struggle and i was getting nowhere! So I switched to trailer loading. to try something new. Same thing. he gave it half a try and then started bolting for the paddock, giving me rope burns. He was 8 years old and had been in a stall with no turnout or training his entire life. He had just been gelded when I bought him. I knew there was such a gentle loving soul in there somewhere, i had seen it. But he was a rearer and had reared and almost flipped with me and I knew he needed training. So I tried CT, clicking just to get him to walk out the paddock gate. That was where he had started breaking away from me. Then I would click for him walking with float in the lead. I got him further and further from the paddock each time. Now he loads nicely, will lead anywhere with a float in the lead, has not reared ever since but he just would not respond to any other methods... he trailer loaded btw because I had got him walking with float in the lead. he would follow the float. Then I led him to the trailer door one day, he balked a little, I gave him float in the lead and he stepped up inside the trailer with me :) Janice -- yipie tie yie yo
