Just saw a tease on the new movie called The Bucket List.

What would you want to do / accomplish (horse-wise) if you knew you were

It's called the "wolf Treatment"...Learned about it decades ago in school
(one of the reasons I don't like Cesar is that it all seems like a big "DUH"
to me)...it should only be done when the dog in question does NOT see you as
pack leader. I had to do it to my Dreyfuss...she was a complete knucklehead
as a pup and by 6 months, it was clear she didn't respect me as leader.
Have never had a problem since

Hello All,
I was looking to buy a horse trailer last year and I found the
following copy of an email exchange posted on The Horse Trailer World
discussion forum. The trailer seller (legitimate) has a lot of fun
with the scam artist "buyer" who claims his wife is selling her china
hutch so the poor family can live in the horse trailer. The seller
keeps the chain going by claiming more and more fantastic options for
the trailer such as tail hooks to keep the horse steady and skis for
icy days in the Dakotas. The payment was to come by some sort of
Western Union scam. The entire email exchange is enlightening.

yes, i think TTEAM is probably great for any horse really! My horse
stonewall doesnt do well in crowds, and I know he isn't
claustrophobic, which is what I was thinking when I wrote that. ghe
gets super excited. But i rescued a paso once that was claustrophobic
and wouldn't go near other horses in the field and would not even eat
if other horses were around, he was so afraid. Pitiful really. He
would not go thru any gate. he was just very crazy and there was no
hope for him with me. I found him a good home tho after giving it my
all to try and help him.

The problem with this horse that i think was hopeless, and Stonewall
too, is that things dont seem to stick. You can spend hours, weeks,
months getting them used to something and then the next day, you have
to start over. Whats UP with that. Its very frustrating. And like
with Stonewall, situational spookiness. he is fine with everything,
even bulldozers operating, roaring fires, but a blue milk bottle cap
sends him flipping out. So you work hard getting him used to blue
milk bottle caps til he is fine witht hem. then take him off from
home and he sees one on the road and jumps sideways. I am about at
the end of my rope with him. I am now just praying he will mellow with
age.

hey lets give her the benefit of the doubt. maybe the poor dear is
like my husband. he wallers around up there like a big sack of
concrete and if the horse takes off on its own, (the horse is never
ever given any command or cue whatsoever. my husband rides according
to whatever the horse chooses to do) then he is suddenly thrown way
back and to keep from flying off over the rump, he holds on by the
reins, which puts the horse behind the vertical. His horse Traveller
as a result has been accidentally trained to always proceed at a
mincing tentative plodding walk, a sort of walking on eggs dogwalk
that looks like he has pain in his hoofs or something. But one good
thing is he has learned that if my husband DOES indeed flip over the
rear and land in the dirt, to stop instantly so as to avoid any undue
pulling on the mouth. Which is a good thing since my husband hasnt
fallen once ever without his foot being hung in the stirrup.

but now he is too heavy to ride Traveller so he is riding Fox, who is
tendermouthed. So when he starts to fall and hauls back on the reins
Fox starts dancing vigorously sideways with his nose way out and his
mouth gaped, eyes rolling wildly.

I make sure his insurance policy doesnt lapse...

i went thru something similar with nasi. The seller had her vet say
he was healthy. But I insisted on an independent vet check. So to be
really independent, I couldnt ask the seller to refer someone so I
contacted a vet thru the yellow pages. He examined nasi and said he
had a slightly elevated temp and he would not sign off on him as
healthy until he treated him with this very expensive very large jolt
of antibiotics. Nasi had no illness symptoms whatsoever. the vet
suggested he do bloodwork. the seller was paying for all this. I had
a trip scheduled to go from fla to texas and pick him up on a certain
date. The bloodwork came back fine. but he said the horse's temp was
still elevated. By one degree. The seller hauled his dam, and two
icelandics from a nearby farm for temp to be taken. they all seemed
normal but nasi, his was one degree elevated. The independent vet
wanted to do more bloodwork. The seller finally said, look, I am into
this for more money than I am willing to spend right now. (almost 500
bucks) I suggest you either buy him on my vet's statement that he is
healthy, get another vet at your own expense, or wait a couple of
months and lets see if he starts showing any symptoms of illness." It
was two weeks til my trip date. I finally paid myself for him to have
the large antibiotic treatment of shots, four shots, one each day
consecutively, the seller having to haul him in each day, a perfectly
healthy horse. It was just a huge pain. Then when I get there the
seller says "well, I didn't think you would take it well if I told you
the vet you selected was sort of known for being disreputable." So
how is a person supposed to know??

it doesnt fit Teev Sylvia! not at all. even tho he has a long long
back the saddle was too long for him. The wide tree seemed ok if I
could have seated it further back. I don't think this is a good
choice saddle for most icelandics. most have way shoter backs than
Teev. I put the saddle pad on my nasi for instance, he is 3.5, and I
didnt even bother with the saddle cause the saddle pad is an exact fit
for it and it was halfway over his butt!

In fact he prefers a face brush all over but unfortunately that won't

as for the raking, sometimes people do things so differently at other
places, using different types of equipment... I know it isnt really
related, but i had an incident very recently. We were working on
something and it was nice out and we left the door open and the house
filled with flies. We have an aversion to using pesticides in the
house. So I got out a fly swatter and had a field day whacking flies.
Next thing I notice my dog earl is GONE. It took forever to find
him, under the house, cowering and trembling. We had to half lift him
and shove him into the house and he ran and hid under the bed. I
actually phoned the guy who gave him to us and asked had he ever
whacked him with a fly swatter. He laughed and said no. then we
remembered when earl first came to us when he was bad we would
take a rolled up newspaper and whack the floor beside him, not hitting
him, but the noise was punishment. me whacking at flies for a couple
of hours must have traumatized him no end with him cowering and
wondering what he had done. We felt bad about it...

But I can rake around Jaspar's back feet but STonewall can be kicky if
startled and Tivar will dance away. Tivar hates a bath. But he came
from dry california where it probably didnt take all day for him to
dryand he hated being bug sprayed when he came here, but Ann in
Calif admits she barely had to bug spray him there. here you have to
bug spray winter and summer.

its always interesting to find what pushes your new horse's buttons.
Yesterday Tivar came up to me at liberty while I was filling the duck
water pool and he was sweaty from running and I put the hose on light
mist and it was the first time ever he asked at liberty for a hose off
and stood for it. That was a break thru really since when he first
came to me he purely hated to be hosed.

OK. NOW, I realize why I had the awful nightmare that I did last night. I

There were two foxes romping in the back pasture with the horses

On the surface it doesn't look so bad but if you "think like a dog" and put
yourself in the dogs' "shoes" you will see that there is a LOT of forcing
the dogs through things; he uses a lot of flooding techniques (which, if you
ever experience, can be really damaging). Sometimes those techniques "work"
because people see the short term results but those dogs do NOT trust him;
they just do things because they fear the consequences of not doing what he
orders. He doesn't allow them time to process or learn properly.

Think of your biggest fear - now, how about if someone forced you to do that
"thing" (by choke collar) without giving you the tools to do it. Suppose we
put you on some big warmblood and chased you through a cross country course
(5 foot fences), pinching your neck every time you wavered. You might get
through that - but - would you trust that person, would you want to do more
for that personwhat would happen if that person suddenly needed you to
be "there" for them - what would you do? Would you happily learn new things
and keep your curiosity?

Some of what he says really does make sense, too. Dogs really do need
exercise (although - to the point of collapse might be a bit much in most
peoples' books), companionship, boundaries

That was Kirkwood, a ski area that is very high in elevation. They are
thrilled as last year was a bust for the ski areas. Now they just have
to be sure there are no avalanche dangers ( they blow up and set them
off before a skier does) and the crowds will go crazy once they can
get up there safely. It is raining hard again here.

Here in Sonoma in northern California we got a good 8" of rain but a nice break
in the storm to allow for run-off so the creeks didn't jump their banks. Our

When I was first looking for an endurance horse, I talked with an elderly
woman in Central California who had almost been a victim of a horse buying
scam. Fortunately, she took what appeared to be a cashier's check to her
bank where it was examined and declared not negotiable.

That hard part for me was that this was probably just the horse I needed. I
wanted to have a pre-purchase done, at my expense, before I traveled so I
would not waste a trip in case he were not sound. Because of her recent
experience, she was unwilling to do that and I ended up buying a nice local
horse instead. I still sort of wish I'd made the trip.

Obviously, I'm thinking about eating and horses - pretty much my usual

On page 85 of the Ultimate book, Linda Tellington Jones mentions horses
"that stay away from other horses, appearing to be low in the pecking order"

RE: [IceHorses] Saddle Fit Videos (on-line)

2008-01-08 Thread Robyn Hood
Hi Judy,

>>Did you see the third video and what he says about adding a pad?

Dave Collins lives in Vernon and he is a really great guy and has a good
massage school. What I take from that piece of his video is that the saddle
didn't fit to start with - it had pressure in the front and back - so adding
the pad is only going to make that bridging space more. Adding pads to an
tight fitting saddle is not going to change it.

Like everything there are different opinions about saddle fit. Like Dave
Genadek, Dave Collins follows the school of using a rocker in the middle of
the saddle to free the shoulders and hips. I have seen that work in western
saddles pretty well.

The English saddles that I have seen with this system work less well IMO.
When a horse moves a hind leg forward, the back moves up; the more
engagement from the back end, the more the back must have some space to move
up. With the Balance saddles the tree is wide enough that the shoulders are
free - there is usually a little bit of bridging in the middle of the saddle
so that as a horse is asked to engage then there is room for the back to
come up.

The one that really knows how the saddle fits is your horse. Not just the
first couple of times you use the saddle (remember that if one pair of shoes
hurt your feet - changing to any other shoe will usually change the pressure
point at least for a while) but look for the long term. Look for the
attitude of your horse and not just for soreness in the back.

[IceHorses] Not spooky about "stuff"

2008-01-08 Thread Karen Thomas
I forgot to mention that Cary took Runa and I took Angie for a walk along
the trails in the woods on Sunday. I didn't take the camera, so no
pictures. Runa has been on these walks many times, and we knew she'd be
fine. Angie is from another part of the country, so I'm sure the fallen
leaves, the logs, the whole "woods" experience was somewhat new to her. She
seemed maybe slightly wary, but curious and ready to get out and see the
world. She wanted to stop and smell everything - leaves on the ground, tree
stumps, branches on the ground, but she was fine. She ate a cookie off the
"trail monster" - the old metal silo that is on its side along the trail.
She walked along at a steady pace, casually looking around, taking in the
sights, only stopping when she wanted to check out something that caught her
attention. On our way out, we walked past the fenced back yard with the
charging (but not dangerous!) sand barking pug, Jack Russell and two
setters, and she didn't care. On to the obstacle course, where she walked
over the bridge and under the shredded tarp without hesitating. She also
walked over the cavaletti as if they were nothing, and between two upright
barrels that are about three feet apart.

I think it's safe to say that Angie isn't "stuff-spooky." She also has a
good, healthy curiosity about the world. I like that.

RE: [IceHorses] Drifa and her friends

2008-01-08 Thread Karen Thomas
Heck, I have already been told that I should not be allowed to have an
Icelandi if I'm not going to tolt correctly. And correctly is so much hold
on the reins that I blistered my tough hands. Sadly, Drifa and I don't tolt
with heavy contact so we are as incorrect as can be.

When did you get Drifa - maybe about 2003-2004 or so? I got Sina in 2002,
but didn't join the lists until the fall of 2004. There were no Icelandic's
in the southeast then that I could find south of KY. The first person I met
was Anneliese, then she sold two of her horses to someone who lives about 15
miles from me, and she introduced us - she's now best buddies. Anneliese
didn't have many for sale after Sina, so I went to Canada to look at Robyn's
horses and we bought a gelding and three mares. So, for about two years we
went merrily on our way doing our own things until I decided to join the
lists. Wow! What a change. I was quickly told on the "traditional" list
that I shouldn't own any Icelandic's if I was not going to get "certified
trainers" to help me. Sheesh - I knew better! I'd owned horses for over
15 years then, and I'd NEVER been treated so rudely. It didn't matter how
many lessons I'd had, how many clinics I'd been to, how many horses I'd
owned, nothing. Per that crew, NOTHING that worked for other horses could
possibly apply to Icelandic's because they are s different. Yeah,
right...

I think you've said this too, but gaits weren't the highest trait on my
priority list when I went looking for Sina. I wanted a 1) safe, 2)
bombproof as possible, 3) short, 4) intelligent and 5) good-natured horse
who would help me through my recovery. Gaits were kind of neutral to me -
I'd owned gaited and non-gaited horses and basically, I could take them or
leave them. I knew I didn't want a horse with gaits like Mac, who had
trouble cantering because he was so lateral. I was looking for a 7-10 year
old well-started gelding who could trot, and ironically, I bought Sina, a
five-year-old, just-started mare with lots of gait. Anyway, because of her
gait-potential (everything she did was smooth, even her step pace that my
disabled riding seemed to put her in too often) that I got re-interested in
gaits. So, my interest in gaits is something that Sina inspired me to get
into - if my first Icelandic had been more inclined to do a two-beat trot, I
doubt I would have become so interested.

Funny how the horses we love can take us down unexpected paths...in every
sense.
