RE: [IceHorses] A Rodeo Icelandic Horse
Hi Lorraine, >>I had a horse that was terrified of the scary sounds in the indoor arena. What is wrong with sidepassing? For me it is the repetitiveness of what she is doing, down the whole long side with the horse's head into the wall. Would you want to be that horse?? Set the horse up for success and let him know one step is correct, then ask for 2 steps, etc. Especially when the horse is not happy or uncomfortable or whatever. Be happy with the little successes and it will bring the big successes. That's where I love clicker training. My horse could have been pulled to the moon, but if she does one tiny little thing and I click, then all of a sudden, her mind is back on me. If I were to ask for a lot before I clicked, she would still be on the moon, and maybe launced me there as well! Re: [IceHorses] A Rodeo Icelandic Horse
What is wrong with sidepassing? Nothing. Except that horse was not really moving forward happily and the rider forced him to sidepass a very long way along a wall. I can't remember, I think she had a dressage whip in her left hand - or I just imagined one. With a horse at the stage of training that horse appeared to be at, I'd do more of a half pass asking him to move forward on an angle for two or three steps then moving him on straight again. Nancy

Re: [IceHorses] A Rodeo Icelandic Horse
Atli doesn't like indoor arenas either. He had two runaway Icelandic run into him while he was a youngster the same day. One during a semi private lesson when the owner panicked which lead to a bolt. Another during a costume class when the "helmet" covered the riders eyes which lead to a bolt. Atli my green baby stood still both times and both times the horse ran right into him. Otherwise he is an incredible horse! Cheryl Icelandic Sheepdogs & Icelandic Horses www.sandcreekicelandics.com

No wonder he doesn't like the ring being asked to 'sidepass' down the entire wall... there is something not right and he is just trying to tell her and no one is listening to try to find out. Amen to that. It hurts me to watch that video. Why do people still think it's about "riding it out...?" The horse is unhappy, and the rider is taking risks. Karen Thomas, NC

Hi Susan >>>He wrote me back saying the saddle fit fine and the horse only does this in the indoor arena, never outside. Yea, right. Poor horse, to be labeled and not listened to. So true.
