The video of the dark horse with the western saddle is a fox trot; the
lighter brown horse is doing a stepping pace.

Boy was I off! Stepping pace was my first thought on that one video,
but I didn't pick up on foxtrot! It looked like a RW to me. I will
have to go and watch them again.

As he's going down the long side of the arena, it's a fox trot, and for a
few strides on the short side, where his nod is more pronounced, there is a
short period of run walk. So, you're not so far off!

there is no way to ride icelandics like this. you can't ride them with
western sadle. don't you realise that riding him with western sadle and
he's uncumfortable with it or that he suffers when you're having
fun?? this is as you'd be
wearing to small shoes because someone told you that. horse can't tell you
what he want or don't want he just has to obay you even if you're hurting
him

Hi! I'm sorry but i can't get over this...you say you don't use boots,
noseband,
shoes of any kind (normal icelandic equipment) but you use this harsh
(strong) bits (kandaren)and western saddles? Special saddles were made for
icelandic horses for purpouse...they have like in front legs high first bone
and if you put saddle on it that will hurt the horse or it will prevent him
to move his front legs properly.
Well you asked what gaites the horses are doing...i say that are no gaites
i'm sorry! one of them on that dark brown horse was something between walk
and trot, other was only fast walking-not tolt! i really don't know what
were you thinking when you posted this wideos. i really can't be quiet about
this because i have 3 icelandic horses and i really don't know half of what
i can learn but i know that i have to at least ride with proper saddle and
bridle and you don't have to use boots if you don't train for
competition...and that boots help horses to balance not to push them to have
higher action in front legs.
i compete with my horses and the first thing i saw was your atitude about
boots and other things that others use.
i hope you'll write me back because i would really like to hear your comment
on this.

hahaha, if it aint broke why fix it?? That horse in the second one
is gaiting like a dream, and in the first, what the heck bit is she
talking about? Even if it was severe mechanically, the horse is being
ridden on a totally slack rein... so lets get thsi straight--- if a
horse is being ridden in a little teeny greyhound narrow saddle
pinching the dickens out of him and a tight noseband and making him
ventroflex to gait, then THATS better than a saddle with a horn??
confused...

+1, esp. agree on the ingnorance factor. The second video appears to
be a nice running walk (something Europeans likely haven't heard much
of) and the first...? Looks like simply a fast walk--doesn't even look
like a flatwalk to me, as the rider is moving so much in the saddle.

Thanks for your input, gals!

The video of the dark horse with the western saddle is a fox trot; the

I'm not so concerned with the comments from the young girls from Slovenia.

Looking back, we heard the same things from Icelandic owners here, up to a
few years ago. Most have progressed along with us.

When reading these messages, it seemed like voices from the past!

They don't have the opportunity of experience and knowledge of gaited horses
that we have here. They have a limited view of how and what a gaited horse
is supposed to do; and what is *normal*. Gaits are warp speed, not slow
and controlled.

You *have* to have the special saddle; you *have* to have the shoes and
boots; you *have* to have the icelandic trainer; you *have* to fit the
picture or you're not right.

We all see 'correct' in some context of what we are used to.~~Elaine Elmer

We have been able to raise the level of knowledge of the Icelandic Horse
owners in North America. They will just have to catch up to us at some
point!

We're doing good! Kudos to all who are taking the training of their horses
into their own hands, who are studying gaits, conformation, anatomy, and
using this information in breeding.

We are setting the pace for the world!

Oh, found this really nice picture ... no noseband!
