Re: [IceHorses] Huginn is Very Sick
Sending all of those things to you and Huggin. I am so sorry and can understand on some level. Hunter spent a week in hospital right after I bought him. He was one very sick horse, but he did have a nice recovery. I'm hoping Huggin will too. Will you keep us posted? Nancy
Re: [IceHorses] Huginn is Very Sick
Good idea Judy - I printed Huggin Raven's picture for the refrigerator door. For us, it's prayer, and nothing gets much more attention here than the refrigerator door. Nancy

[IceHorses] Huginn is Very Sick
As some of you know...my pony Huginn has been ill since last Thursday when I was camping down in Forestville in southern MN. Thursday...he seemed a bit off, but I couldn't figure out what was going on with him. On Friday, his temp went up to 101.5 - 102.5. His normal temp is 100.0. I gave him some banamine...that knocked it back down to 100.0. On Saturday...when it hit 104.5...I called a local Vet. The local Vet thought is was a cold, he gave Huginn is fast acting tetracycline antibiotics via IV and started him on a long lasting antibiotics and banimine IM to help control his temp. Huginn had his last antibiotic injection this morning. And the last does of banimine yesterday morning. Since Saturday...he had been off...lethargic, depressed, not really interested in eating/drinking. My Vet and I ...played phone tag...since Monday morning. During this time ... I was talking to the Vet who treated Huginn down in southern MN. Expressing to him...what I was seeing in Huginn. The Vet told me it was common side effects of a cold. It see how he would do a few days...after his last injection of antibiotics. I finally made contact with my Vet today...on the way home from school. She also told me to keep an eye on him and if his temp went over 102.0 to bring him in...ASAP. I got home this afternoon from school...went directly to the barn to take Huginn's temp and feed the ponies dinner. Huginn temp was over 105 ! My hands burn ...when I touched him. I called my Vet...she told me to give Huginn a dose of banimine, load him up and bring him to the clinic. I cold hosed Huginn down in hopes of getting his temp down and trying to keep him somewhat cool in the trailer. The drive to the Vet's is about 40 miles. Once at the Vetshe gave Huginn a complete check up and ran some blood work. She gave him tetracycline antibiotics via IV. Huginn's blood panel showed that he is dehydrated, anemic, his platelet count is seriously low and his white blood count is off the charts. Everything that should be low...is high and what should be high...is low. She said Huginn has Ehrlichiosis. ;0( I have to take Huginn back Thursday and Friday mornings at 7 AM for two more IV rounds of tetracycline antibiotics and banimine IV ...to help control inflammation and pain in his joints. If three rounds of IV tetracycline antibiotics does not help Huginn...she will give him two more rounds. My vet told me that Huginn is in extreme pain. ~;8[ Right now...we need to get through the next few days, then the weekendthen the next week...then the week after that. We have to keep an eye out for founder and secondary infections. PLEASE...please send my cute little pony your prayers, thought, bright healing light and love. We sure do need it.
