because some of us are so thin we need the extra cushioning so that
our bones won't bruise the horse's back.

They keep your butt relatively clean.

They aren't as slippery as a bare horse's back.

If you want to ride longer and you weigh more than a flea, you can add a
spinal pad to add a little protection for the horse's back.   Maybe other
reasons, but those are what comes to my mind right off the bat.

That is that Horsedream pad I was asking about a while back, I still 
think I will try to get one in the spring, it does look comfortable.
