Since you're keeping the manure around, I have had good luck with fly
parasites. I spread them on the manure every couple of weeks and it
seems to
make a big difference. It costs about $30 every two weeks, but we
are all
happier for it. I start mid may and finish in October.

I tried Fly parasites last year, but did not start until middle of
summer, so I don't know how effective they were. This year I started
early May and we will see if it makes a difference. But this year
seems to be a lot worse for black flies and even the deer flies are
moving in closer to paddocks and earlier than last year. You just
can't seem to win this battle.
Laura, where in Southern Ontario are you located? I am just west of
London with my Pada and Bjarki ( and other non-Icelandics), who both
just turned four and need to be worked with.
