[IceHorses] Winter and Wound Care

Thank you guys for responses to what has worked for you. It would be
hard to put vet wrap on the hip. I was thinking of a gauze dressing
with duct tape but knowing Starri, he would chew that off too! I've
sprayed the bitter tasting/no chew spray around the hip when I noticed
hair was missing but it didn't seem to stop him. I'll look for the
Watkins salve...I think nasty-tasting is the key to stop the biting.

When the boys have a particularily raw wound (Gusti just had one on
his hip too)...I have some Watkins salve that I use. Ordinarily I
wouldn't put anything on it, but the salve must taste bad because they
seem to stop biting there for a few days and it gives the wound a
chance to heal.

my "vet cream" (or some similarly blandly named product) doesn't seem to
freeze. in any case, the horse's body heat should help keep the stuff
relatively warm

good luck,

I remember several winters ago, probably "many" winters by now, we had a TWH
colt that cut a flap in the front of his pastern in a snow storm (in high
desert AZ). We had to load him up and go to the vet's. She shaved the
wound, in the slushy snow, in the parking lot, in the storm, sewed him up, put
some
vet wrap on, which lasted a few days or so, and that was about it.

He played around with the other colts in the mud and snow without a problem.
He was fine without any special doctoring.

[IceHorses] Winter and Wound Care

One of my horses has a bite mark on his hip with exposed skin. I have
been putting the Icelandic lotion on it (oils and herbs) that you can
buy from Susan at SaddleUp Tack as worried about the skin being exposed
to the freezing temps. Then started thinking about whether the lotion
would freeze. Not sure what the freezing temp of cod liver oil is (main
ingredient in the lotion).

What do folks do about dressing exposed wounds in the winter?
